Biography

Ferzan Ozpetek was born in 1959 in the region. During the choice of how to continue his studies, he opposes the will of his father, who wanted him to be educated in the United States. In 1976, thanks to the support of his mother, he came to Italy under a scholarship from the University of Rome. Ferzan graduated from La Sapienza University of Rome with a degree in Cinema and Directing History, attends art and costume history courses at the Academy of Navona and directing courses at the Silvio d'Amico National Academy of Dramatic Art. After working in the Live Theater, Julian Beck and Judith Malina, he manages to get closer to the world of cinema, he begins to collaborate as an assistant and assistant director with Massimo Troisi, Maurizio Ponzi, Ricky Tognazzi, Sergio Citti and Francesco Nuti. His first job as an assistant director was the painting "Scusate il ritardo" (1982) by Massimo Troisi, followed by the painting "Son contento" by Maurizio Ponzi, in which he also has little experience as an actor.

Debut - Turkish Bath

His first work as a director was the film “ Turkish Bath ” ( 1997 ), produced jointly by Italy, Spain and Turkey. The film was released in cinemas in May 1997 and caused great success from critics and society, was awarded several prizes and presented at the 50th Cannes Film Festival in the category " Quinzaine des Réalisateurs ". In addition to Cannes, the film was presented at other international festivals and sold in more than 20 countries.

In 1999 , he shot The Last Harem in Turkey, which tells about the painful love story between the concubine of Sultan Safiye and the eunuch Nadir against the backdrop of the fall of the Ottoman Empire. The story was written by Ozpetek himself in collaboration with Gianni Romoli . Ozpetek makes a film with Tilda Corsi and R & C Produzioni. Ferzan Ozpetek's second film also received a good response from the public and critics. The picture “The Last Harem” was presented in the Un Certain Regard category of the Cannes Film Festival in 1999, and then was presented at the London Film Festival and the Toronto International Film Festival .

Extravaganza of Misunderstanding and Window opposite

In 2001 , he directed The Extravaganza of Misunderstanding featuring Marguerite Bui and Stefano Accorsi, a bitter comedy that deals with topics such as friendship and homosexuality. The film was a great success at the box office, was one of the most famous films of 2001. The extravaganza of misunderstanding has won many awards, including 3 Golden Globes and 4 Silver Ribbons, and Marguerite Bui was nominated for the David Di Donatello Prize.

In 2003, he made the film “ Window opposite ”, which was attended by Giovanna Mezzogiorno , Raul Bova , Filippo Nigro and Massimo Girotti (this film was the last for Girotti). The film received a great response from the public and critics, was nominated for 5 David Di Donatello awards, 3 Silver Ribbons and 3 Golden Globes. Thanks to success in Italy and Europe, the film also hits the United States, distributed by Sony Pictures Classics.

With the constant cooperation of Gianni Romoli and Tilda Corsi in 2004, he removes "The Pain of the hearts of others ." According to critics, the film was less successful than previous work of the director. However, he ended up in twelve David Di Donatello Prize nominations, receiving an award for Best Actress in a performance by Barbara Bobulova, as well as for Best Screenplay.

In 2007, the film " Saturn Against " is released, which is characterized by a very rich cast, which includes Pierfrancisco Favino , Luca Argentero , Filippo Timi , Isabella Ferrari and Ambra Anjolini , as well as Marguerite Bui and Stefano Accorsi , with whom he already worked, filming "Extravaganza of misunderstanding." The film also received a large number of awards.

President of the Italian Republic Giorgio Napolitano awarded the Ozpétec Prize De Sica in 2007.

Going to Fandango

2008 is an important year for Ferzan Ozpetek, it was a turning point in his career. Single Shots

In 2009, he began a new film project: after writing a script with Ivan Cotroneo, he shot the film “ Single Shots ”. For the first time, the director directs the film outside of Rome, the city in which he directed many of his works. Idle Shots is a comedy released in March 2010, featuring actors such as Riccardo Scamarcho , Alessandro Preziosi , Nicole Grimaudo , Ennio Fantasticini and many others. The film was presented out of competition at the 70th Berlin Film Festival , which was held from February 11 to 21, 2010. On May 22, 2010, the city of Lecce granted him honorary citizenship.

In 2011, in Bari, the film Idle Shots was awarded the Mario Monicelli Prize for Best Director and the Tonino Guerra Prize for Best Feature.

Theatrical direction and first novel

On April 28, 2011, he embarked on a new professional experiment, making his debut as the theater director of the opera Aida , organized during the season by Maggio Fiorentino. On November 5, 2013, his first novel, entitled “Red Istanbul” (Rosso Istanbul), was released. This is an autobiographical novel dedicated to the relationship between the director and mother.

In March 2014, he released his tenth film, “ Fasten Your Belts, ” which was shown in all Italian cinemas. This is a film that combines drama and comedy. Starring: Casia Smutniak , Francesco Arch and Filippo Shikkitano . The film had huge box office revenues - more than 4,500,000 euros, was in eleven David Di Donatello award nominations and six Silver Ribbon award nominations.

In November 2014, Ferzan Ozpetek was chairman of the jury of the 32nd Turin Film Festival.

Red Istanbul and other projects

In March 2017, his eleventh film, Red Istanbul, was released based on his novel of the same name. The film was shot in Istanbul with the participation of exclusively Turkish actors, 16 years after working on the film "The Last Harem". Also in Istanbul, he makes a video for the song «l'amore di Mina.

Personal life

On September 27, 2016, he entered into a same-sex marriage with Simone Pontezilli in Campidoglio di Roma, with whom he had lived fourteen years before.

Recognition

With the film "Extravaganza of Misunderstanding" participated in the main competition of the Berlin IFF . The picture “Window opposite” was awarded with prizes: David di Donatello for the best film, “Silver Ribbon” by the Italian syndicate of film journalists in Italy, award for the best director at the IFF in Karlovy Vary [6] .
