Events
- January 8 - in Bangladesh near the city of Chandpur , a collision of two passenger trains occurred. 50 people were killed, about 200 people were injured [1] .
- March 13 - the movement of trains on the new international line Mashhad - Sarakhs - Tedzhen with a total length of 320 km was opened.
- In 1996, the diesel fleet of the Ministry of Railways of Russia was replenished with only two trunk locomotives, and the purchase of shunting diesel locomotives ceased until 2000 .
- Due to the decrease in traffic and the lack of demand for group refrigerated rolling stock , an excess of sections of up to 9 thousand cars was formed with an acute shortage of single cars. The IPU Board by decree of February 28, 1996 and the order of the Ministry of Railways of March 28, 1996 No. S-2570 decided to bring the fleet of isothermal wagons in line with the forthcoming volume of transported goods [2] .
