Born December 10, 1837. By origin, a nobleman of the Moscow province, he was brought up in the 1st Moscow Cadet Corps, from which he was released as lieutenant to the Little Russian Count Rumyantsev-Zadunaysky regiment on June 6, 1857.

Two years later he was sent to the Academy of the General Staff . At the end of the course in 1861, Cherepanov was assigned to the General Staff and appointed to be at the headquarters of the reserve division of the 5th Army Corps , which was part of the forces of the Kiev Military District .

In 1863, Cherepanov participated in the suppression of the Polish uprising .

In 1870-1872 Cherepanov led the movement of troops by rail, and in 1872, with the rank of colonel , he was appointed acting chief of staff of the 1st Cavalry Division. At this post, Cherepanov was awarded the orders of St. Stanislav 2nd degree (in 1871) and St. Anne of the 2nd degree (in 1874).

During the war with Turkey, Cherepanov was first in the cavalry detachment, reflecting the Turkish landing on the left bank of the Danube ; then he was in the Shipkinsky detachment, and then participated in the passage through the Balkans , bypassing Shipka in the Skobelev convoy, was in the battle of this convoy with the Turks at Sheinovo , and finally, at the forefront of the army, he led the cavalry detachment from Kazanlak to Adrianopol . For military differences in the continuation of the campaign, Cherepanov was awarded the Order of St. Vladimir of the 4th degree with swords and a bow and received a golden saber with the inscription "For courage" (both distinctions were granted in 1878).

With the end of the war he returned to Russia and in 1881 was awarded the Order of St. Vladimir 3rd degree. December 17, 1884 Cherepanov was promoted to major general , with the appointment of an assistant chief of staff of the Amur Military District.

He died in Blagoveshchensk on March 10, 1886.

Cherepanov posted several articles and notes of a military-theoretical nature in the Military Collection .
