Biography
Hans Adolf Krebs was born on August 25, 1900 into a Jewish family [5] . His father, Georg Krebs, was an operating otorhinolaryngologist, his mother was Alma Krebs (née Davidson). He was the middle of three children.
- 1919 - 1924 : studied in Göttingen , Freiburg , Munich , Berlin
- 1924 - 1930 : worked for Otto Warburg
- since 1930 : worked in a clinic
- 1932 - 1933 : taught at the University of Freiburg , from where, due to Jewish descent, he was fired after the Nazis came to power in April 1933.
- 1933 - 1935 : worked at Cambridge University , where he was admitted in July 1933 with the assistance of D. G. Hopkins .
- 1935 - 1954 : worked at the University of Sheffield
- 1954 - 1967 : worked at Oxford University
- since 1967 - professor at the Royal Hospital at Oxford .
Hans Adolf Krebs died on November 22, 1981 in Oxford.
Son - British zoologist John Krebs (born 1945).
Major works
He made a major contribution to the development of the tricarboxylic acid cycle (Krebs cycle) . In 1932 he described the ornithine cycle of urea synthesis in animal liver .
Awards and recognition
- 1953 - Albert Lasker Prize for Basic Medical Research , "For the discovery of the urea and citric acid cycles, which are basic to our understanding of how the body converts food into energy."
- 1953 - Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine (together with Fritz Lipman ),“For opening the citric acid cycle .”
- 1954 - Royal Medal , "In recognition of his discovery of two key reactions in animal metabolism and for his distinguished contributions to the knowledge of cell energetics."
- 1958 - Knight Bachelor
- 1961 - Copley Medal , "In recognition of his distinguished contributions to biochemistry, in particular his work on the ornithine, tricarboxylic acid and glyoxylate cycles."
