A marble statue of St. Cecilia by Stefano Maderno (1599-1600), a sculptor of the late Renaissance, is located in front of the altar of the church of Santa Cecilia in Trastevere . In 1599, in the catacombs of St. Callistus , where, according to legend, the saint was buried, the burial of Cecilia was found. The tomb was briefly opened, the sculptor Stefano Maderno was allowed to inspect the untouched body. It was after this that he created the famous marble figure. The statue is located at the altar of marble and gilded bronze in a niche of black marble. The statue depicts a saint with a severed head, which helps confirm the saint's identity. The statue in style can be attributed to proto-baroque, as Maderno depicted not the idealized moment of the martyr's death, but a tragic scene, which naturally represents the death of a saint.
