History
Historically, the country's territory was divided into six provinces - Pinar del Rio , Havana , Matanzas , Santa Clara , Camaguey and Oriente . In 1940, the province of Santa Clara was renamed Las Villas.
In 1976, changes were made in the administrative-territorial division of the country: instead of 6 provinces, 58 regions and 407 municipalities, the country's territory was divided into 14 provinces and 167 municipalities [1] . At the same time, the province of Oriente was divided into five new provinces:
- Las Tunas ;
- Granma
- Holgin ;
- Santiago de Cuba ;
- Guantanamo .
The province of Santa Clara in 1976 was divided into three:
- Villa Clara ;
- Cienfuegos ;
- Sancti Spiritus .
The province of Camaguey was also divided into Ciego de Avila and Camaguey itself.
In August 2010, it was decided to create two new provinces from January 1, 2011 by dividing the province of Havana into two parts [2] :
- Artemis
- Mayabeke .
At the same time, three municipalities in the east of the Pinar del Rio province also left for the province of Artemis: San Cristobal, Bahia Onda, Candelaria.
