Before offensiveThe Italian command planned to engage the 2nd and 3rd armies in the upcoming offensive. In total, on the front 60 km, the Italians concentrated 51 divisions and 5326 guns. It was harvested about 3 500 000 shells. The offensive was thought out, distracting and constraining actions were supposed. The Italians were opposed by the 5th Army under the command of Boroevich . The Austrian command transferred 14 more divisions to the Italian front .
Start of the OffensiveOn August 19, the Italians began to build bridges over the Isonzo, but only six were managed to navigate from the planned 14 bridges. On the same day, the Italians forced the river to attack the Austro-Hungarian positions. The offensive developed quite successfully: it was possible to advance 10 km, to capture 20,000 prisoners, 125 guns. But due to fatigue of troops and the removal of the rears, on August 29 the offensive stopped. The 3rd Army did not advance as successfully as the 2nd Army: despite the support from the sea of the British and Italian ships, the successes of the attackers were very insignificant. On September 4, the Austro-Hungarian troops recovered the situation with counter-strike.
Completion of the OffensiveFurther, the battles take on the character of local significance. October 5 The Eleventh Battle of the Isonzo was completed. The offensive of the Italian troops put the Austrians in a difficult position. The Austro-Hungarian army, having suffered great losses, began to decay morally. The military and politicians in Vienna began to fear that in the event of a new Italian offensive, the Austro-Hungarian army could simply not withstand. Austria-Hungary badly needed help and support from an ally, Germany.
