The speed skating competition at the 2006 Winter Olympics was held at the Oval Lingotto indoor ice rink in Turin . The Italians won 2 gold and 1 bronze on home ice, and these were the first awards for them in speed skating at the Olympic Games in history.

The most successful were the American (7 medals, including 3 gold) and the Netherlands (9 medals, including 3 gold) skaters. 8 medals (2 gold) were won by Canadians.

The 33-year-old Claudia Pechstein from Germany at the Games in Turin brought the number of her Olympic awards to 9, including 5 gold medals on her account. None of the skaters won the medals at the Olympics anymore.

At a distance of 5000 meters, Pekhtayn lost only to her peer, former cyclist Clara Hughes from Canada, who accounted for two bronzes of the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta.
