History
In Soviet times, the plant was one of the largest enterprises in the city [1] .
After the declaration of independence of Ukraine, the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine canceled the decision to reconstruct the coke oven battery of the Mariupol Coke and Chemical Plant (envisaged in accordance with the 13th five-year plan for the development of the national economy of the USSR) [2] .
In 2005, SCM owned 84.2% of the plant’s shares, SCM Limited owned 9.36% (Cyprus), and the upcoming merger with the Azovstal Steel Works was announced in early August. The merger of the two enterprises was completed in the month of December this year [3] [4] .
The company operated eight coke oven batteries with a design capacity of 3.65 million tons of coke per year.
Products: metallurgical coke [5] (the main consumer is the Azovstal metallurgical plant), coke nut [5] (the main consumer is the Zaporizhzhya and Nikopolsky ferroalloy plants ), coke breeze [5] (the main consumer is the Ilyich Iron and Steel Works ) and coke oven gas [5] . Chemical coking products are also produced: crude benzene , coal tar , ammonium sulfate , gas sulfur , a solution of spent desulfurization (POC).
