Canvas

The use of canvas in shipping

Sail - a heavy dense hemp , linen or half- linen fabric made of thick yarn.

Cannabis sail has high strength, repels moisture, does not deteriorate from sea water. In the era of the sailing fleet, canvas was a strategic commodity. The importance of canvas increased since the 15th century , with the advent of large fleets and the opening of sea routes to India and America . At the end of the 19th century, due to the introduction of the steam fleet , the need for canvas decreased, before the advent of synthetic materials it was widely used for sewing raincoats, jeans , overalls, duffel bags and luggage covers. The fashion for clothes made of canvas (raincoats, windcheaters, gym shoes, etc.) arose in the 1960s and still has not lost its relevance.

A coarse, dense canvas, impregnated with refractory or water-repellent and antiseptic compounds is called a tarp [1] .
