The tournament under the current name was founded in 2004. From 1920 to 1992, the third division in the English football league system was the Third Division of the Football League (from 1921 to 1958 it was further subdivided into the Third Northern Division of the Football League and the Third Southern Division of the Football League ); from 1992 to 2004 it was the Second Division of the Football League .

League structure

League consists of 24 teams. For the season, which lasts from August to May, each team meets with everyone else twice: once - on its field and once - on the opponent’s field. Thus, the season for each club consists of 46 matches. For winning the match, the team receives three points, for a draw - one point. In case of defeat, the team does not receive points. Seats at the end of the season are determined in accordance with the number of points earned, in case of their equality - by the difference in goals scored and conceded, then - by the number of goals scored. In case of equality of points, the title is awarded according to the difference of goals, in case of equality of the difference of goals - on scored goals. If after that it is not possible to determine the winner, the teams occupy the same line of the tournament table. If it is necessary to determine the champion or team that will leave the championship, as well as the team that qualifies for other tournaments, an additional match of the playoff format in a neutral field is assigned. [one]

At the end of each season, the two best teams and the playoff winner go to the Championship , and the four worst teams with the least points at the end of the season are eliminated in League 2. The playoffs of League 1 are a mini-tournament for teams which, based on the results seasons took places from third to sixth; the winner of the playoffs receives a ticket to the Championship. In the playoffs, the third team plays against the sixth team, the fourth team plays against the fifth. Two teams play two games in the semifinals (at home and away). The winners of each semifinal meet in the one-match final.

Teams in the last four places in League 1 are eliminated in League 2 . Their place in League 1 is occupied by four new teams from League 2: the teams that took the first three places and the winner of the playoffs of League 2 (which qualifies the teams who finished the season in places from fourth to seventh).

Broadcasts

Sky Sports broadcasts League 1 matches live with reviews on the BBC in a program called The Football League Show , which also broadcasts highlights of Championship and League 2 matches. Broadcast matches are also available on radio on Sundays. Major games can be seen on the BBC website.
