Authority

The President of Greece is the Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces . Until 1974, his powers were unlimited, but in 1975 were reduced by the new constitution . After the 1986 reform, the president is a ceremonial figure, and the fullness of political power was transferred to the country's prime minister [1] .

Presidential Election

The president of Greece is elected by parliament (and not through a popular vote) for a term of 5 years. Section 32 of the Greek Constitution provides that a president must be elected at a special session of parliament at least one month before the end of the presidential term of his predecessor. The term of the president may be extended in case of war or the election of a new president will not be completed on time.

Oath

Before taking office, the president takes the oath.
"I swear (in the name of the Holy, consubstantial and indivisible Trinity) to defend the Constitution and laws, ensure their strict observance, protect the national independence and territorial integrity of the country, protect the rights and freedom of the Greeks and serve the common interest and progress of the Greek people."
