"Polish Requiem" was written for several decades ( 1980 - 2005 ). In 1980, its first fragment appeared - “Lacrimosa”, written in memory of the Gdansk dockers who were shot during the rebellion against the totalitarian regime ten years earlier; the composer dedicated this music to Lech Walesa and the Solidarity alliance led by him. In 1981, Agnus Dei appeared, dedicated to the memory of Cardinal Wyszynski , deeply revered in Poland; in 1982 - “Recordare Jesu pie”, written on the occasion of the rank of blessed priest Maximilian Kolbe , who in 1941 , saving another prisoner, voluntarily went to death in Auschwitz . In 1984, on the fortieth anniversary of the Warsaw Uprising against Nazi occupation , Dies Irae was created (different from the 1967 essay ). The first edition of the Polish Requiem was first performed in Stuttgart in September 1984 under the direction of Mstislav Rostropovich .

In 1993, the composer added to the score “Sanctus” (in this form the “Polish Requiem” was performed at the Penderetsky Festival in Stockholm on November 11, 1993 under the direction of the author).

In 2005, Penderetsky added to the Requiem Chacon for a string orchestra in memory of Pope John Paul II .
