Geography
The area of the Eastern province is 9996 km² (15.24% of the total area). The land area is 9361 km². The surface of the water surface is 635 km². The percentage of water surface is 6.35%.
The province borders the north with the northern provinces ; from the west with North-Central Province , Central Province , Uva Province ; from the south to the southern province ; from the east it is washed by the Bay of Bengal .
The provincial coast abounds with lagoons , the largest of which are Batticaloa, Kokkilay, Upar and Ulakali.
History
The province has existed within its borders since the 19th century (October 1, 1833), but the province received legal status in 1987 (November 14, 1987), when the 13th amendment of the Sri Lankan constitution of 1978 was adopted, which created the provincial councils [3] [ 4] . From 1988 to 2006, together with the Northern Province, formed the Northeastern Province .
