Northern Province ( Sinhala. උතුරු පළාත Uturu Palata , there. வட மாகாணம் Wada Maakaanam ) - the province of Sri Lanka . The administrative center is Jaffna . Three kilometers from Jaffna is the Tamil religious center of Nallur , known for the Hindu temple of Kandaswami .

Most of its population is Tamil , with a minority of Sinhalese and Muslims. The current civil war has its roots in this province. Most people earn livelihoods as farmers, fishermen, supplying professionals to the civil and business sectors. The province is known for its higher education institutions. Small-scale industry, such as chemical, light manufacturing and textiles, was also present before the civil war. The Jaffna Peninsula is irrigated by underground aquifers, while the rest of the province has only irrigation tanks.
