Biography

He studied at the Tbilisi Theater Institute. Shota Rustaveli in the workshop of D. Aleksidze . After graduating from the institute in 1965, he worked as a director of the Drama Theater in Zugdidi (until 1967). Then, in 1967-1970. worked at the Tbilisi Theater of Young Spectators , from 1970 to 1980 at the Shota Rustaveli Theater [2] .

Since 1991, he worked closely with the Bolshoi Drama Theater. G. A. Tovstonogov , but for a long time refused the post of chief director [2] . Later, Chkheidze said on this occasion: “I knew that no matter what was done, it would be worse than at the time of Tovstonogov . But he is not, and generally Tovstonogovs are born extremely rarely. And life goes on, and I, delighted with the theater that was once, do not set it like Tovstonogov ” [3] . Nevertheless, in 2004 Chkheidze lost to many years of persuasion by the artistic director of the theater, Kirill Lavrov, and was appointed chief director of the BDT [2] . After the death of Lavrov in 2007, he became the artistic director of the theater [2] .

In recent years, critics have written about stagnation in the Bolshoi Drama, and on February 19, 2013 Temur Chkheidze resigned. He explained the reasons for his resignation at a March 4 press conference: “Now, probably, the time has come when the BDT needs changes that I personally cannot make. Many call me a retrograde, but it was my principle way - to preserve Tovstonogov’s legacy. I am convinced that less than 10 years will pass, and the Russian theater will again need the classics. One young man told me that my performances were perceived as an anachronism. I am grateful to him for honesty ” [4]
