Thomas Patten “Tom” Stafford ( born Thomas Patten “Tom” Stafford ; born September 17, 1930 , Weatherford, Oklahoma ) is an American astronaut .

Biography

Stafford was born on September 17, 1930 . In 1952, he received a bachelor of science degree with honors from the United States Naval Academy and began serving in the US Air Force as second lieutenant. After the initial flight training, he was trained as an interceptor pilot. Graduated with honors from the school of test pilots. It was selected by NASA in September 1962, in the second squad of astronauts .

He is one of the 24 people who flew to the Moon (as part of the Apollo 10 expedition), but he did not land on it.

In 1969 and 1970, Stafford was awarded the NASA Medal of Excellence .

He participated in space missions under the Gemini-6A , Gemini-9A programs, and was a commander in the Apollo 10 and Apollo missions under the Soyuz Apollo program .

After flying into space, he worked at the Air Force flight test center until his retirement in 1979 [1] .

Personal life

From his first marriage to Fay, Shoemaker has two daughters - Dion Kay and Karin Elaine. From the second marriage with Linda, Ann Dishman - two sons - Michael Thomas and Stanislav, whom the couple adopted in an orphanage in Fryanovo near Moscow [3] . Linda has two children from a previous marriage - Cassie Niring and Mark Hill. Hobbies: hunting, sailing, weightlifting, swimming.
