Story
The former Red Army soldier Andrei Khromov (the surname is fictitious [1] , although the initials hint at Kharlapiev [2] ), driven by the idea of creating a new kind of struggle - “self-defense without weapons”, travels to Central Asia , where he becomes acquainted with the popular struggle of kurash . During his stay, the hero more than once finds himself in difficult situations, from which he will come out with honor. The film, dedicated to the memory of Anatoly Kharlampiev , the founder of the Sambo fight, takes place in Soviet Turkestan in the 1920s.

Creation
The film reinforced the legend established by that time that Anatoly Kharlampiev was the only creator of the Sambo wrestling (in reality, the student of Oschepkov ). His name is recognized in the initials of the main character. The scenario of Pavel Lungin , in the opinion of sports historians, telling how the main character travels through the areas of Central Asia liberated from the Basmachis and collects methods of popular struggle, had nothing to do with the history of the struggle, nor with the facts from the life of Kharlampiev [2] .
Rental
During the rental film gathered 29 million viewers [3] .
The influence of the film
Rental of the film contributed to an increase in the number of people willing to engage in Sambo at times [4] [2] . The film is still preserved in the Russian television distribution [5] .
Interesting Facts
- Taking Khromov to his disciples, Ustos Juma says: “We are taught not in the same way as you do. In the old days, parents, giving their son to the master, said: "Teacher, here is our son! Teach him, beat him! Your meat and bones are ours ..." This phrase is borrowed from the biography of the Uzbek Uzbek literature classic Aibek (Musa Tashmuhamedov), based on his story "Childhood" (1962):
Call him Muhammad Musa,
Your honor, your meat,
We leave only his bones.
