Origin

The exact origin of Loop is not known. But if you draw onomastic data, it is possible that Loop came from a family who lived in the area of modern Champagne , and later moved to the region of Toulouse. Several bishops and lords bearing the name Loop came out of this family in the 5th - 7th centuries :

  • Loop I , Bishop of Troyes in 426–478 / 479;
  • Loop , Bishop of Soissons in 511-532, nephew of Remy , Bishop of Reims , who baptized King Clovis I ;
  • Loop , Bishop of Chalon in 535;
  • Loop , Duke of Champagne in 571-584, brother of Magnulf , Bishop of Toulouse until 585;
  • Loop , Bishop of Sansa in 612;
  • Loop II , Bishop of Troyes at the beginning of the 7th century;
  • Loop , Bishop of Limoges in 631.

Biography

Around 658, Loop revolted against Patrician Felix , who after 658 received from Mayor Ebroin "a principle for all cities up to the Pyrenees , as well as for all the hated Vascon people" [1] . However, Loop later became his supporter.

Around 670, Loop succeeded Felix as the Duke of Aquitaine and Vasconia. [2] It is known that in 673 he owned Toulouse and Bordeaux . This year, Loop entered into an alliance with the Visigoth Duke of Septimania, Flavius Paul , who rebelled against King Wamba and attacked Beziers [3] . Between 673 and 675, Loop convened a church synod in Bordeaux [4] .

In the years 673–676, Loop took advantage of feuds in the Frankish kingdom in order to increase his possessions. He took possession of the Austrian cities of Rodez and Albi . In 675/676, Loop tried to capture the neustrian city of Limoges , but was seriously injured. Miracula Sancti Martialis Lemovicensis. It is not known whether Loop remained alive after this, but after 676, information about him disappears. Only in the year 700 is the new duke of Aquitaine mentioned, Ed.

The result of the reign of Loop was the creation of an extensive Duchy of Aquitaine, stretching from Vienne to Garonne . Also, Aquitaine was finally subordinate to Vasconia. This submission persisted until the second half of the VIII century .

Heirs

There is no mention in the sources that Loop had children. However, it is now believed that the son of Lupa could be Ed the Great , the Duke of Vasconia and Aquitaine, who most likely inherited Lupa I [5] . However, the genealogy of the Gascon House can be traced more or less reliably starting with Loop II , Duke of Vasconia at the end of the VIII century .

  2. ↑ The exact year of Felix’s death is not known. This happened between 670 and 676. It is possible that Loop received Vasconia during the lifetime of Felix.
  3. ↑ Lewis Archibald R. The Dukes in the Regnum Francorum. - P. 400. Julian of Toledo calls Lupa “princeps” ( Julian of Toledo. Historia Wambæ regis. - P. 524-525. ).

  5. ↑ The exact origin of Ed has not been reliably established. According to the Charter of Alaon , compiled on 21 January 845 in Compiegne , the King of Aquitaine Haribert II married Gisela, heiress of the Duke of Vasconia Arno (Amanda) , and three sons were born from this marriage: Chilperic , Boggis and Bertrand. After the death of Haribert, and then Chilperic, King Dagobert I transferred the duchy of Aquitaine to Boggis and Bertrand, after whose death Aquitaine was inherited by the son of Boggis, Ed. However, most historians consider the “Charter of Alaon” a later fake and doubt the existence of Haribert’s sons. More on this: Rabanis, JF Les Mérovingiens d'Aquitaine. More reliable is the version according to which Ed was the son of Loop I ( J. de Jaurgain . La Vasconie, étude historique et critique, deux parties . - Pau, 1898, 1902. ).
