"President Vargas" is one of the largest diamonds ever found, with an initial mass of 726.6 carats [1] .
The diamond was discovered on August 13, 1938 in Brazil , in the alluvium of the Santo António River in the Coromandel district of Minas Gerais . Subsequently, 29 diamonds were made from it, the largest of which had a mass of 48.26 carats. Fourteen of the largest diamonds were given an emerald cut .
The diamond is named after Brazilian President Getulio Vargas , during whose rule it was discovered.
In 1939, the diamond was valued at 600 thousand dollars .
