Dolores del Río ( Spanish: Dolores del Río ; August 3, 1905 - April 11, 1983 ) is a Mexican actress who became popular in Hollywood during the era of silent cinema .

Biography
Maria de los Dolores Asunsolo i López Negrete ( Spanish: María de los Dolores Asúnsolo y López Negrete ), who became known as Dolores del Rio, was born in the Mexican state of Durango on August 3, 1905 in a wealthy family. During the Mexican Revolution, her family went bankrupt, and she decided to become an actress in order to restore her financial condition.
In 1921, at the age of 16, she married Jaim Martinez del Rio and, with the help of an American friend, the couple immigrated to the United States in the hope of starting a career in show business as a screenwriter and actress, respectively. At one party, she met with a Hollywood producer, thanks to whom her career in cinema began. By then, Dolores del Rio had already divorced her husband, but decided to leave his last name. Her film debut took place in 1925 in the movie "Joanna."
In 1926, Dolores del Rio, along with Joan Crawford , Janet Gaynor , Mary Astor and Fay Ray, was included in the WAMPAS Baby Stars list. Her career continued to develop successfully throughout the remaining era of silent films , and the actress was considered one of the most beautiful actresses in Hollywood.
In 1930, Dolores del Rio married Cedric Gibbons , one of the art directors of MGM . With the advent of sound cinema, she was initially taken only for secondary roles of exotic women, but she again achieved success after the release of the film “Bird of Paradise” in 1932. Then she had prominent roles in the films “ Flight to Rio ” (1933) and “In Caliente” (1935).
In 1941, she divorced her husband because of the affair that began with Orson Welles , who was ten years younger than her, and in 1943 starred in his film Journey into Fear . The actress also maintained good friendships with Mexican artists Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo , as well as with many Mexican filmmakers. In 1942, she returned to Mexico , where she continued her career as an actress in Mexican films, the most famous of which were " Maria Candelaria " (1944) and "The Fugitive" (1947). She was nominated many times for the Mexican film award Silver Ariel and four times became its owner. In 1959, Dolores married American theater businessman Lewis Riley.
In 1960, she starred in the lead role with Elvis Presley in the movie The Burning Star , and four years later appeared in John Ford 's film The Autumn of the Cheyenne . In the 1950s and 1960s, she appeared in the lead roles in many classical theatrical productions, such as Anastasia (1956) and Ladies' Man (1958). The last film role of the actress was in the film "Children of Sanchez" (1978), where one of the roles was played by Anthony Quinn .
Dolores del Rio died on April 11, 1983, due to liver disease in Newport Beach, California . After death, she was cremated, and her ashes buried in the Pantheon Dolores in Mexico City on the territory of the " Rotunda of Illustrious Creators .
For her contribution to the film industry, Dolores was awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on Vine Street, 1620.
