Aarau [1] [2] , also Aarau [3] ( German: Aarau ) is a city in northern Switzerland , on the Are River, the administrative center of the canton of Argau [4] . Located at an altitude of 368 m above sea level.

The territory of the municipality is 894 ha, of which 491 ha are used. Railroad station. Electrical, printing, leather and footwear industry. Some of the best private clinics in Switzerland.

The protestant part of the population is continuously decreasing, amounting to 43.5% of the population in 2000. 29.2% of the population are Catholics, 4.8% are Muslims, 3.2% are Orthodox.
History
On the territory of Aarau, artifacts of the Neolithic period , the ruins of a Bronze Age settlement, and the remains of a Roman wooden bridge were discovered.
The city was founded around 1240 . The first mention of the city dates back to 1256 , and city rights were granted to it in 1283 . Remained in the possession of the counts of the Habsburgs until its destruction by the inhabitants of Bern in 1415 .
In August 1712, peace was concluded here, putting an end to the Toggenburg War
In March 1798, the city was occupied by French troops and declared the capital of the Helvetic Republic , becoming the first capital of a united Switzerland . In 1803, the city became the capital of the expanded canton of Argau .
Architecture
The old city forms a four-part square. A special characteristic of the city is the painted pediments of houses, thanks to which Aarau is called the “city of beautiful pediments”. The fortress with a tower of the 12th century, the city church (between 1471 and 1478 ), the city hall of 1515 , the “Fountain of Justice” ( 1634 ), the clock tower Obererturm, decorated with the fresco “Death Dance”, made in the Cubist style ( 1966 ).

The city meeting is elected by residents for a period of 4 years and consists of 50 people. At the district level, some governance issues are addressed through direct democracy. There are optional and mandatory issues submitted to the referendum , and the population has the right to legislative initiative.
Sport
Football club " Aarau " has been playing in the major Swiss league since 1902 . He won three times in the national championship ( 1912 , 1914 , 1993 ) and won the Swiss Cup ( 1985 ).
Handball club “ TV Sur ” twice won the Swiss championship.
