Vladimir Romanovich Arseniev ( August 7, 1948 , Leningrad - October 30, 2010 , St. Petersburg , buried at the Novodevichy cemetery in St. Petersburg [1] ) - Russian Africanist and ethnographer, expert in collecting and exposition activities; foreign member of the Academy of Sciences of Overseas Countries (Paris, France, 1999) [2] , member of the Scientific Council of the Russian Academy of Sciences on Africa (1999) and the Paris Society of Africanists (2004). The author of works on the ethnography of West Africa, the culture of bambara , the methodology of the humanities and museology.

Biography
Born in a family of doctors. In 1966 he graduated from physics school No. 38 of the city of Leningrad. In 1971 he defended his thesis at the Department of African Studies of the East Faculty of St. Petersburg State University . After passing in 1971-1974. As a military translator in Africa (Bamako, Mali) he entered the graduate school of the Institute of Ethnography of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR, which he graduated in 1977. Pupil D. A. Olderogge . From 1977 to 2006 worked in Africa, since 2006 - senior researcher at the Center for Political and Social Anthropology, MAE RAS . Teacher of African disciplines at the Oriental Faculty of St. Petersburg State University . Field work in Mali (among the bambara) in 1971-1974, 1980-1981, 1996-1997, 2002, 2005; ethnographic expeditions to the Perm region (1967-1970), to the Kuril Islands (1985). [3]

Ethnography of West Africa, problems of culturology, political science, sociology, correlation of figurative (art) and descriptive (abstract-logical) systems, museology. Holistic approach to modeling bambara culture; alternatives to the civilization process. Prediction of social processes in Russia, the formation and evaluation of strategies for optimal development.
The first to apply set theory in studying the structure of an African family. Editor-compiler, founder and publisher of the scientific almanac "Manifestation" (since 2000). Since 1998 - the head of the ongoing theoretical seminar on the problems of methodology and applied research in the humanities. [four]
Museum work
He collected and transferred to the MAE RAS more than 10 ethnographic collections with a total volume of more than 1,500 objects on the culture of Africa and Russia (Karelia, Perm Region, Kuril Islands); in the State Hermitage - more than 500 items, including approx. 200 for the culture of Africa, approx. 300 in numismatics, bonistics, faleristics and medal art of Africa and France.
Socio-political activities
Author of numerous analytical and journalistic articles (mainly in the St. Petersburg Gazette ). In 1990 and 1994 - Candidate for People’s Deputies of the Lensovet and ZAKS of St. Petersburg .
