Shimon Marcin Kossakowski ( Semyon Demyanovich Kossakovsky ; Polish. Szymon Juda Marcin Korwin-Kossakowski ; 1741 , the estate of Shila in the present Jonava region - April 25, 1794 , Vilno ) - statesman and military leader of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth , an active participant in the Barsky and Targovitsky Confederation since 1763), the complete Lithuanian hetman (1792-1793), the last great Lithuanian hetman (1793-1794).

Biography

Representative of the gentry clan of the Kossakoff coat of arms The youngest of the four sons of the captain Zemaitsky and guard of the Coven Dominic Kossakovsky (1711-1743) and Marianne Zabello . The elder brothers are the governor of Vitebsk and Braslav Mikhail , the coughtier Anthony Inflant, the bishop of the Influenza Jozef Casimir .

Educated at the Jesuit College in Kovno and at the University of Koenigsberg . In 1763 he received the post of subordinate Coven . In 1764 and 1766 he was twice elected ambassador ( deputy ) to the Sejm.

In 1767, Shimon Martin Kossakovsky joined the Radom Confederation , in the same year he was secretary of the diplomatic mission of the Radom Confederation in Russia.

At first he supported Stanislav Augustus , but then he sharply criticized him at the Repninsky Diet and joined the Bara Confederation . In the fall of 1768, an offensive by Russian troops forced him to leave for Prussia . Abroad in Saxony and Turkey, he carried out activities aimed at the overthrow of Stanislav Augustus.

Upon his return, leading the Confederate forces in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, he won a series of victories over Russian troops. His detachment of 4 thousand people made a successful raid in the Smolensk region, then moving through Kurland , Prussia and Mazovia to Greater Poland .

In 1771-1772 - Marshal of the Smolensk Voivodeship.

In 1775, he reconciled with the king and became one of the leaders of the pro-Russian group.

1786-1788 - Member of the Permanent Council.

In 1790, with the rank of major general, he joined the Russian army and participated in military operations against Turkey in the Balkans. 03/25/1791 - lieutenant general of the Russian service.

In 1792 - became one of the organizers and leaders of the Targovitsa Confederation .

In 1792, the Russian corps under his command launched an attack on the territory of the Commonwealth from the side of Polotsk . In the captured by Russian troops in January 1792, Vilno proclaimed himself a full hetman of Lithuania . In 1793 he became the great Lithuanian hetman.

During the uprising of 1794, he was arrested by rebels on April 24 and imprisoned in the Arsenal . The next day, on a court verdict, on April 25, he was hanged in a yellow slafrock on a gallows on Town Hall Square . He was buried in the crypt of the church of St. James the Apostle in Jonava .

Family and Children

He was married to Teresa Pototskaya, daughter of the governor of Volyn Mikhail Pototsky (c. 1660-1749), from a second marriage with Princess Martianna Oginskaya (1713-1766). Teresa was married to the governor of Minsk, Jozef Gilzen , with whom she divorced her first marriage.
