Geography

The Kuril region belongs to the regions of the Far North . [eight]

It is located in the central part of the Kuril Islands and includes the islands: Iturup , Urup , Broughton , Black Brothers ( Chirpoy , Brat-Chirpoyev ), Simushir , as well as all the small islands and rocks located within the 12-mile sea zone around these islands.

Kuril region (urban district) has sea borders:

  • In the north, with the North Kuril region (urban district) , separated by the Diana Strait
  • In the south, with the South Kuril region (urban district) , separated by the Catherine Strait

History

On June 5, 1946, the Kuril region was formed as part of the South Sakhalin region of the Khabarovsk Territory . On January 2, 1947, the Yuzhno-Sakhalin Region was liquidated; its territory was included in the Sakhalin Region , which was withdrawn from the Khabarovsk Territory .

In June 2006, the Kurilsky District municipality of the same name was transformed into the Kurilsky City District municipality in the city ​​district .

The southern part of the region ( Iturup Island ) is the subject of a territorial dispute with Japan , which includes it in the Nemuro urban district of Hokkaido Prefecture.
