Biography
Jacek Palkevich was born during the Second World War in a labor camp in Germany.
He began his career as an officer on a merchant ship under the Panamanian flag . In 1972-1973, he worked as a diamond inspector in Sierra Leone and at the gold mine in Ghana . In 1975 he graduated from the journalism school in Milan and has since worked as a journalist, in particular in the appendix to the famous Italian newspaper Corriere della Cera .
Palkevich’s name has become synonymous with strong, masculine adventures. He wrote down fascinating pages, marked by his fearlessness, in the book of the world adventure epic. He led expeditions organized as in the last century: through the deserts of the Gobi and Sahara - by camel, through Borneo (from one coast to another) - on a pie, along the desert of the Skeleton coast - on foot, to the cold pole in Oymyakon - on reindeer teams. I tried to clarify the border line between Europe and Asia, traveled in the wake of Dersu Uzal . In 1994, under the auspices of the newspaper Trud, he organized an environmental mission in the Krasnoyarsk Territory , consisting of astronauts from 5 countries, urging all the inhabitants of the Earth to join in the preservation of our living planet so far. But he is especially proud that in the role of a voluntarily "crashed" crossed the Atlantic Ocean in a lifeboat.
In 1982, Palkevich, using his exceptional experience as a professional traveler, founded the first Survival School in Europe. He investigated the limits of human capabilities in severe climatic zones under extreme loads. He trained anti-terrorist brigades for action in the jungle and desert sands. He also trained emergency workers in South America at the Ministry of Emergencies.
In 1998, he received the Amber Butterfly Grand Prix for the best travel book of the year (TERRA INCOGNITA - Bellona Publishing House).
As a member of the Russian Geographical Society, in the summer of 1996 he made the last geographical discovery of the century under his flag. The international scientific expedition, which he led, determined the exact location of the source of the great Amazon River. The results of the work allowed to “lengthen” its length, it is 7000 km, that is, 300 km longer than the length of the Nile. For this discovery, recognized by the Peruvian authorities, he was awarded the title of Cavalier of the Order of Merit for the Italian Republic and the Polish Golden Cross of Merit .
In 2011, the Peruvian authorities erected a monument at the source of the Amazon with a memorial plaque commemorating the discovery.
From the pen Jacek came 30 books. His reports continue to attract the attention of readers of renowned European magazines. In Russia it was published in such publications as Itogi , Around the World , Moskovsky Komsomolets , Komsomolskaya Pravda , GEO , National Geographic Traveler , Izvestia . Often participated in the telecast of Yuri Senkevich .
In 2010, Pope Benedict XVI awarded him the golden cross Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice .
He is the honorary ambassador of Masuria in the global competition "New 7 wonders of nature."
His achievements were shown by Andrzej Kapłanek in the biography "Palkevich, the path of the explorer."
