Martin Scorsese has repeatedly been recognized as one of the greatest and most influential filmmakers of our time: for example, a survey conducted in 2010 by the popular American magazine Paste showed that Scorsese was considered the best living director by the United States and left Jean-Luc Godard and Steven Spielberg behind [4 ] .
The compiler of the official biography of the director Vincent Lobrutto compares it with another legend of the world of cinema - Stanley Kubrick , “only Kubrick is cold and analytical, and Scorsese is hot and emotional” [5] .
Scorsese films are characterized by expressive cruelty and violence, in cinematic circles he is known as a master of gangster films. A huge influence on the director had the pictures of King Widor , John Houston , Michael Powell and Emerih Pressburger , John Ford , Elia Kazan , Bernardo Bertolucci and many others [6] . Scorsese prefers not to change the creators of his projects, constantly working with Robert De Niro , Leonardo DiCaprio and editor Thelma Schunmaker .
Scorsese is the owner of about 105 various film awards and prizes, including the Golden Palm Branch of the Cannes Film Festival (1976), the Golden Globe Award for directing (2003, 2007, 2012), the Emmy for directing a drama series (2011) and the American Prize Academy of Motion Picture Arts Oscar (2007). The director’s most notable films are Evil Streets , Taxi Driver , Raging Bull , The Last Temptation of Christ , Glorious Guys , Cape of Fear , Casino , New York Gangs , Aviator , The Departed , The Island of the Damned , The Guardian of Time , and The Wolf of Wall Street . On February 28, 2003, Scorsese became the owner of a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame [7] .

Francesco Scorsese, Martin's paternal grandfather, was born in Italy in the commune of Polizzi Generosa in the early 1880s [8] . Francesco’s mother died when he was six or seven years old, so after another marriage of his father, the boy felt abandoned [8] . Soon he was adopted by a farmer who lived in the neighborhood [8] . Working in the fields, Francesco began to think about America, the land of freedom, the land of opportunity [8] . At that time, the young man was the so-called Ital. contadino - a member of the peasant class of farmers, fishermen and artisans [9] . He worked hard on the land of his adoptive father, who had big plans for Francesco [9] . He wanted his son to help him with the housework and someday marry one of his daughters, but the nineteen-year-old Francesco was adamant: with every wave of his braid, his desire to leave for the USA increased [9] . Rejecting his father’s offer, he boarded the ship and arrived in America at the beginning of the 20th century [9] .
As for Martin's paternal grandmother, Theresa, she, like her future husband, was born in Polizzi Generosa [9] . Teresa was an excellent cook who created classic dishes from this region of Italy [9] . A small but strong-willed woman left her homeland in a small boat [9] . After a month of wandering, hunger and disease, Teresa saw the famous green lady with a torch - she finally got to the USA [9] .
Scorsese’s maternal grandfather, Martin Kappa, who was later named after little Martin, was born in the commune of Jiminna [9] . Like Francesco, Martin almost did not know his own mother and was brought up by a foster family [9] . With adulthood, a tall energetic and elegant young man with an unusual mustache became a cavalry soldier [9] .
His future wife, Scorsese’s maternal grandmother, Domenika Kappa, was also born in Jimin [9] . Once she heard the clatter of hooves of cavalry horses passing her house [9] . The girl ran out onto a low balcony, from where she saw soldiers sitting on exhausted animals [9] . Suddenly her eyes crossed the eyes of a handsome young warrior in a blue uniform, on whose head a hat with a large white feather flaunted [9] . They looked into each other's eyes and immediately fell in love [9] . After twenty-two days of courtship, Martin and Domenica got married [9] . In 1912, their daughter Sarah was born [9] . Martin went to America in order to find a new life for his family [9] . From there, he wrote letters to Domenica asking him to come to him, but she was simply afraid of the trip and continued to refuse [9] . Frustrated, Martin composed the last call, threatening to leave her if she did not arrive urgently [9] . Domenica and Sarah got on the next ship, but only because the girl’s sibling sailed with them [9] . When the ship was already ready for departure, Domenica discovered that her brother was gone - she was deceived [10] . The journey was long and hard [10] .
In the end, two completely different families settled in New York on Elizabeth Street. [11] Francesco, a proud man without any formal education, got a job at the New York Industrial Company , in the shipyards of which he worked as a laborer [11] . He, like hundreds of other employees, was under the guidance of a superior, which did not suit him at all [12] . The man left the company and opened ten grocery stores [12] . In the early 1900s, he became engaged to Theresa in the old church of St. Patrick [11] . Scorsese moved to 241 Elizabeth Street, and Kappa chose the fourth floor of 232 houses across the street [11] .
Martin Kappa worked on scaffolding in the small town of Springfield that in New Jersey , and returned home only on weekends [11] . This hard work brought him forty-five dollars a week - good money for that time [11] . It could not do without industrial injuries - when Martin seriously injured his arm and fell out of the work schedule, Domenika, a professional seamstress, started to work in order to reduce losses [11] . Like many Italo-Americans, the woman worked at home, trying to survive in the democratic era of free enterprise [11] . She also taught this craft to her daughters, who watched her work with interest [11] .
Martin Scorsese’s mother, Catherine, was born in 1912, and father Charles (real name Luciano) a year later [11] . They grew up in Little Italy , where Katherine went to high school, which she dropped out without finishing [12] . Instead of studying, she got a job in a factory for the production of clothes for children's dolls, having worked there until she was seventeen [12] . With the coming of age, the girl moved to another plant on Second Avenue [12] . Shortly afterwards, Charles's brother invited her to Mr. Silverman, the “King of New Jersey”, as he was called by the people who worked on clothes made in New Jersey factories [13] . Katherine worked with Silverman for thirty-nine years. [13]
Childhood
Martin Scorsese was born in New York . Scorsese grew up in a very pious Catholic family. As a child, he suffered from asthma with frequent attacks and therefore could not play with other children, because of which his parents or older brother took little Martin with him to the cinema. It was during this period of his life that he began to develop a passion for cinema, especially he fell in love with the historical genre, since at least two films of this genre - “ Land of the Pharaohs ” and “El Sid” - had a deep and long influence on him. Also at this time, he developed an interest in neorealistic cinema . He talked about the influence of documentaries in Italian on him, as well as how “The Bicycle Thieves ” and “ Rome, an open city ” inspired him and influenced his views, perhaps thanks to his Sicilian genes. In the documentary My Voyage to Italy, Scorsese notes the Sicilian episode of Roberto Rossellini 's Paisa , which he watched with his relatives, immigrants from Sicily, which significantly influenced his life. He also acknowledges the great influence of the French New Wave on him and stated:
| The French New Wave has influenced all the directors who have worked since then, regardless of whether they watched films or not |
He also notes such directors as Ingmar Bergman , Federico Fellini , Paradise Satjit , Michelangelo Antonioni as the most influential in his career.
Initially, Martin Scorsese wanted to become a priest, attending Cardinal Hayes High School in the Bronx, but chose a movie and entered the New York College of Arts and Sciences (now known as New York University College of Arts and Science ), where he received the title of Bachelor of Arts in 1964.
First Short Films
After retiring from military service, she studies at New York University , where she makes two short films: “What is such a pretty girl like you doing in a place like this?” And “It's not just you, Murray.” Scorsese's best-known short film, Concrete Haircut, filmed in 1967. The film criticizes the US government's invasion of the Vietnam conflict, which is why the second title of the film is Vietnam'67.
Full debut
Martin Scorsese’s first full-length film had the working title “I Call First” and was shot in 1967 after the director finished work on his short film “A Concrete Haircut”. The main role in the film was played by aspiring actor Harvey Keitel , who later starred in several other Scorsese works. The film told the love story of Jay R. and his girlfriend, living on the streets of New York. By the end of the filming, Scorsese decided to rename the film to “ Who's Knocking on My Door?” "(Who's That Knocking at My Door?). After that, he shoots two more films: the semi-documentary film “Street Scenes” and “ Bertha, nicknamed the Freight Wagon” (Boxcar Bertha), based on a true story.
Evil Streets
In 1973, the film “Evil Streets” was released. In the film, in addition to Harvey Keitel , the beginning actor Robert De Niro, who previously worked with Brian De Palma, played. In the center of the plot of the film are four guys who are in the shadow of their older generation of relatives: Tony, an Italian about 30 years old, runs a local bar; Mike claims to be a serious mafia boss, doesn’t drop the mask of seriousness for a second, despite the fact that the only one from the whole company acts on the basis of the concepts of the old-generation mafia; Johnny Boy borrow money from everyone without any intention of returning, he absolutely does not give a damn about all the concepts, laws and connections of this society, he just needs to drink, take off girls, fill someone’s face; and Charlie, the nephew of the local mafia boss, seeks to bring to life the ideas of the great Francis of Assisi , but does it “on the streets,” by his shortsighted measure. Charlie is very religious, he tests his patience and faith: he is trying to save Johnny Boy, despite the fact that he leaves his girlfriend at the time of an attack of epilepsy. As a result, the Scorsese film was highly praised by the public [14] .
Alice Doesn't Live Here
In 1974, Ellen Burstin decided to shoot in Martin Scorsese’s new film “ Alice Doesn't Live Here Any More ”. The film did not receive any special awards, except for the Oscar for Best Actress in 1975. The film tells the story of Alice, whose husband died, leaving her unemployed, with a child in her arms.

In 1976, Scorsese made the film "Taxi Driver", in which Martin Scorsese's talent as a director was first fully revealed. In addition to directing, critics praised the acting work of Robert De Niro and the work of cameraman Michael Chapman. The premiere took place on February 8, 1976 in the USA . The second exit took place on February 16, 1996 in the USA. In the film, Robert De Niro plays a taxi driver, a former Marine Travis Bickle.
The Golden Palm Branch of the Cannes Film Festival ( 1976 ), two BAFTA awards . In general, the film received 18 film awards, was nominated for four Oscars and nine other awards.
The film was featured in an attempted assassination of US President Ronald Reagan . In the 1970s, John Hinckley watched the movie " Taxi Driver " at least 15 times and, apparently, identified himself with the main character of the film [16] [17] . For the next few years, Hinckley was persecuted by Jodie Foster (a minor prostitute who played in the film) around the country and even got to the point that, having learned from the magazine that she was studying at Yale , he entered the same course of writing skills [18] . At the end of 1980, Hinckley wrote many letters to Foster [19] , and also spoke to her twice by telephone. Having received a polite, but unequivocal refusal, he, however, did not abandon his intentions [17] . Hinckley was sure that, having become famous throughout the country, he could achieve equal social status with Foster. Like the hero of the film, Travis Bickle, Hinckley began to persecute President Jimmy Carter with the goal of killing him. [20] In March 1981, Hinckley wrote Foster a few more notes. Their tone was noticeably different from the previous ones and prompted her to transfer them to the dean. The Dean, in turn, passed the notes to the police, but Hinckley could not be located [21] [22] . Soon, Hinckley tried to kill Ronald Reagan and was arrested.
New York, New York and The Last Waltz
"New York, New York" ( Eng. New York, New York ) is a lyrical drama with elements of comedy and a large number of musical numbers . The shooting took place in New York and Los Angeles , USA . The film was released in 1977 . Starring Robert De Niro and Lisa Minnelli . The title theme song New York, New York later became extremely popular with Frank Sinatra .
The Last Waltz is a documentary by Martin Scorsese (1978), which captures the final concert of the Canadian - American rock band The Band , which took place on Thanksgiving November 26, 1976, in the Winterland Concert Hall, San Francisco . The soundtrack for the film came out as a . Scorsese’s work is considered to be the standard of “concert cinema”.
Raging Bull
In 1978, when Martin Scorsese almost died of an overdose of drugs (he sniffed cocaine), Robert De Niro, visiting the director in the hospital, tried to persuade him to never use drugs again and expressed his wish that Scorsese make a film about the boxer. At first, Scorsese refused (he did not like pictures about sports), but De Niro eventually managed to convince him. Many argue that De Niro saved the director's life by managing to insist on his return to work.
As a result, Scorsese made the film “Raging Bull” about the famous American boxer of Italian descent, world champion Jake La Motta. The plot is built as the memories of the aged Jake in the 1960s about the heyday and end of his brilliant career in the boxing ring. Jake got his nickname for his indomitable fighting spirit and frantic disposition, which was also experienced by his loved ones. The film tells about the difficult relationship between Jake and his brother, promoter and coach Joey and his wife Wicky. The film was highly praised by critics and won an Oscar for Best Actor and Best Editing (the film was nominated in six more categories).
Money color
The film begins in a bar, where an elderly and seasoned in katala billiard battles (Paul Newman) meets a young and talented, but not ambitious player (Tom Cruise). Then begins their joint tour of the states of America. The old man teaches the young subtleties of the game, getting a percentage of his wins. Accompanied by their young girlfriend of the hero Tom Cruise. In the end, the companions disperse to meet after a while at the table in the finals of a major tournament.
For his role in the Scorsese film, the legendary Paul Newman was awarded the only Oscar in his life for acting.
The Last Temptation of Christ
In 1987, Martin Scorsese began setting up a film with the working title “Passion”. It is interesting to note that representatives of various Christian faiths made their contribution to the creation of the painting: the Catholic Scorsese, who was planning to take the church dignity in his youth, Kazantzakis, the Orthodox Christian of the Greek Church , and scriptwriter Paul Schroeder, a follower of Calvinism [23] .
A serious ensemble of performers was involved in the work, and the picture would not have taken place if the actors, who considered it an honor to work with the master, did not agree to act in film for a modest fee [24] . It was preliminarily planned that the shooting will take place in Israel, but it turned out to be more expensive from a budget point of view and not so safe. There are no large-scale special effects in the picture - the Savior's miracles are depicted very modestly. Also in the picture there is no crowded crowd - this is again the consequences of a limited budget. In October 1987, filming began in Morocco [23] .
In January 1988, Scorsese returned to New York to complete the post-production phase of the painting. The director was in a hurry to finish the installation, as he anticipated that the release of the picture in mass rental would be accompanied by serious difficulties [25] .
In August 1988, the film premiered in the United States and Canada.
The Departed
In 2006, Martin Scorsese made a remake of the popular Hong Kong crime thriller Double Castling , released in 2002, the film was called The Departed. Leonardo DiCaprio, Matt Damon and Jack Nicholson starred. The film was about two of the best graduates of the police academy who found themselves on opposite sides of the barricade: one of them is an agent of the mafia in the ranks of law enforcement agencies, the other is a “mole” introduced into the mafia. Everyone considers it his duty to detect and destroy the enemy, but constant life in distorted realities changes the inner world of heroes.
On the first weekend after their release on the screens, “The Departed” took first place in their debut box office in the United States, earning $ 26,887,467 and ahead of the tape “ Date of My Dreams ” and “ Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning ”. In the UK, in the debut, the film yielded only to the film “ The Devil Wears Prada ”, but the next week came out on top. As of December 15, 2006, the film raised $ 118.7 million in the United States and $ 219.5 million worldwide, becoming Scorsese's most commercially successful film.

Bad»
The Rolling Stones. Да будет свет
