History
Initially, the city of Yakshan was founded by the Cheremis Hume prince Koja Eraltem , on the lands of the Shang Cheremis prince Kai , who had a residence in Shang ( Mar. Shansa ). Subsequently, Koja Eraltem adopted Christianity under the name Eliazar and built churches, freely allowing Russian and Tatar settlements on the Mari lands. In 1246, the Russian settlements in the Powiat were suddenly attacked by the Mongol Tatars and ruined. The Russian population, hiding from the raids of the Tatars and civil strife, settled in the Mari principality: in Shang and Yakshan. With the adoption of Christianity, the Mari population gradually assimilated with the Russians.
