History
Enotourism is a relatively new form of tourism. The history of this type of outdoor activity can vary from one region to another; for example, in the Napa Valley, such tourism became popular only after marketing efforts in 1975 [1] . An impetus for popularity was also the Paris , held in 1976 [2] .
In other regions, such as Catalonia and Spain, the movement began to gain popularity only in the mid-2000s [3] .
Among English-speaking tourists, enotourism became popular after the release of the movie “ On the Sidelines ”, where the central characters visit wine cellars in the Santa Barbara and Southern California area .
Present
Enotourism also grew significantly during the first decade of the 21st century . In the United States, 27 million travelers, or 17% of American tourists, go to culinary or wine events. In Italy, this figure is about 5 million tourists; Each year, the country helps out of this 2.5 billion euros [4] .
On a private initiative, Recevin annually hosts an “Enotourism Day” on the second Sunday of November in order to develop the wine tourism industry in Germany , Austria , Slovenia , Spain , France , Greece , Hungary , Italy , Portugal and North America [5] ; The first day of wine tourism was created on May 11, 2013 [6] . This event is planned throughout the continent.
Activity
Mostly visit places where wine is produced (i.e. factories). Visitors are usually introduced to the history of the winery, show them the wine production process, and then let them taste it themselves. In some wineries, people are staying in a small guest house. Many visitors buy their favorite wines at the same factory. This represents approximately 33% of their annual sales [7] .
A very small and low percentage of production in Priorat and Catalonia . In these places, in most cases, the hosts themselves organize small trips and carry visitors; the trip includes a walk through the vineyards, which is made to help visitors experience the uniqueness of this area [8] .
More sophisticated tastings may include full dishes in addition [9] .
As the industry of enotourism develops, additional opportunities arise: for example, in some wineries you can ride a burricleta bike on the field [10] .
Future
Most travel agencies believe that the industry segment has enormous growth potential, however, in some regions it operates at only 20% [11] .
