The son of Baron Wilhelm Wrangel ( German: Bernhard Wilhelm von Wrangel ; 1747 - 1845 ; from the house of Lüdenhof ) and Baroness Barbara Wrangel ( German: Hedwig Barbara Elisabeth von Wrangell ; 1758 - 1838 ; from the house of Lagen [1] ).

Vasily Vasilievich Wrangel is the brother of Professor Yegor Vasilievich Wrangel , cousin Ferdinand Petrovich Wrangel [2] and second cousin Yegor Yermolaevich Wrangel ( 1803 - 1868 ) - grandfather P.N. Wrangel .

Since 1809 he studied at the Naval Cadet Corps . Since 1815 he served as midshipman in the Baltic Fleet. In 1817, with the rank of midshipman, he took part in a voyage abroad on the ship "Dresden" in Cadiz (Spain). February 27, 1820 promoted to lieutenant . In the campaign of 1820 on the ship "Leipzig" cruised in the Baltic Sea.

In 1822-1828 he was an assistant to Professor V. Ya. Struve during his work on the degree measurement; in 1828-1839 - Assistant General F. F. Schubert during trigonometric and astronomical work on the shores of the Baltic Sea . April 6, 1830 promoted to lieutenant commander . December 31, 1831 transferred to the rank of lieutenant colonel of the corps of naval navigators. He participated in the Schubert chronometric expedition, then was the head of the survey and sounding operations in the Baltic Sea. Since December 6, 1849 Wrangel - major general [3] ; On August 30, 1855 he was promoted to lieutenant general [3] and appointed head of the Baltic lighthouses , and in 1860, on top of this, a revelry commander from the port with renaming on June 21 as vice admirals [4] and production on January 1, 1866 as full admirals [4] . Wrangel was a corresponding member of the St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences (since 1828) [5] and a member of the military academy in Stockholm .

From 16.10.1831 he was married to Ida von Helmersen (1808-1888). Their only son is the actual state adviser Vasily Berngardovich (Wilhelm Andreas Georg; 1832 - 1905 ).
