Biography

Born on January 4 (17), 1911 in the city of Ivanovo-Voznesensk (now Ivanovo) in a working class family. Russian .

He graduated from junior high school, Ivanovo sovpartshkolu. In 1933-1935, he served in the Red Army. In 1935, Ivan Babanov graduated from the Military School. The All-Russian Central Executive Committee (now the Moscow Higher Military Command School). After that he worked in the system of the Ministry of Internal Affairs , then as a foreman for the repair of weaving looms at the Melange plant . Member of the CPSU (b) / CPSU since 1932.

With the beginning of the Great Patriotic War in the summer of 1941, he was again called up to the Red Army and sent to naval aviation. He graduated from the Naval Aviation Navigators courses and from August 1943 he fought in the 1st Guards Mine-Torpedo Aviation Regiment of the Baltic Fleet .

Guards Lieutenant Babanov by September 1944 made 68 sorties, participated in the sinking of 6 transports, tanker and patrol ship of the enemy. Always accurately brought the torpedo to the target and accurately dropped the torpedoes. So on August 13, in two departures, the crew of the pilot Shishkov and the navigator Babanov sank first the patrol ship , and then the large transport. Soon, in one of the sorties, an anti-aircraft missile exploded in Babanov’s navigator’s cabin. The pilot was able to land a damaged car at a nearby airfield. In the hospital, he was counted 16 wounds. Here he learned about the high award.

After the war, continued service in the Navy . In 1946, Senior Lieutenant Babanov was dismissed in the reserve. Returned to his hometown. He worked as an assistant master at the melange plant in Ivanovo.

He died on January 4, 1972 . He was buried in the cemetery Balino of Ivanovo.

Awards

  • By decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of November 5, 1944, for exemplary performance of command tasks and courage and heroism in battles with the Nazi invaders of the guard, Lieutenant Babanov Ivan Dmitrievich was awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union with the award of the Order of Lenin and the Gold Star medal (No. 4335 ).
