Song
“Mamo” is a song that was performed by Russian representative Anastasia Prikhodko at the Eurovision Song Contest 2009. She was selected on March 7 from 16 compositions of the Russian national selection. The presentation of the Ukrainian version of the song took place on February 28, 2009, and the Russian-Ukrainian version on March 12.
In addition to two language versions, there are two time versions: the first lasts 3 minutes . 10 s ., And the second - 2 minutes. 49 sec The second option was performed at the competition.
National Selection
Initially, it was planned that the national selection will be held in three stages: first, the selection of a song, then three performers, then the best combination. But on February 3, 2009, a change in the scheme was announced - now the selection will take place within the framework of one concert, where applicants will already be performing potential songs for Eurovision. Yuri Aksyuta commented on this statement: [1]
We entrusted the selection of the final participants to the professional commission. And the main competition will unfold behind the scenes.
We realized that you should not bring half the work to the viewer’s court, you need to make the final, in which there will be worthy ones.
The professional jury of the Russian selection for the competition included Yuri Aksyuta , Kim Breitburg , Alexander Dulov, Igor Krutoy , Alexander Lunev, Igor Matvienko , Vladimir Matetskiy , Konstantin Meladze , Ruben Oganesov, Larisa Sinelshchikova , Maxim Fadeev , as well as the executive secretary of the Organizing Committee for the competition Eurovision 2009 Alexander Barannikov and Chairman of the Council for Humanitarian Cooperation of the CIS countries Jahan Pollyeva .
On March 6, one of the members of the professional jury Konstantin Meladze left the jury for ethical reasons: he is the producer of a new participant in the Russian selection Anastasia Prikhodko and the author of the song “Mom” , with whom she participates in the finals. Meladze believes that "it will be honest and objective." [2]
The final of the qualifying competition was held on March 7, 2009. The presenters were Yana Churikova , Andrei Malakhov and Dmitry Shepelev . Churikova and Malakhov led the show itself, and Shepelev reported from behind the curtains.
Challengers
On November 24, 2008, Channel One began accepting applications from applicants for participation in the qualifying round of the Eurovision 2009 contest.
On February 26, 2009, a list of 15 applicants selected to participate in the Russian final was announced, the winner of which will receive the right to represent Russia in the competition. On March 2, Alexey Vorobyov withdrew his candidacy, explaining this by employment in another project, the terms of which coincide with the date of the national final. [3] But on March 5, he sent a letter to Channel One asking him to be restored to the list of participants. The request was granted. [four]
On March 5, Anastasia Prikhodko was included in the list of participants. One of the members of the jury of the Russian qualifying competition proposed her candidacy, after she terminated her participation in the Ukrainian qualifying competition - she was disqualified for multiple violations of the rules - in protest. [5]
During the meeting, the jury Anastasia Prikhodko was awarded a special Muz-TV award in the “Recognition” nomination.
Voting
The selection of the participant from Russia took place in two stages. The popular vote using SMS messages and calls determined the three leaders: Anastasia Prikhodko, Valeria and the Quatro quartet . Of the three applicants, a professional live jury selected a Russian participant for Eurovision 2009. After the jury returned from the meeting, an envelope with the name of the winner was handed over to the hosts. Gaining 6 votes out of 11, Anastasia Prikhodko won.

On May 15, at a plenary meeting of the State Duma, deputy Anton Belyakov raised the question of the appropriateness of checking the circumstances of the victory of Ukrainian singer Anastasia Prikhodko in the Russian selection for participation in the Eurovision song contest. [6]
Violations of the rules
A massive violation of the rules was noted during the national selection of the Russian participant. On the same day, after the announcement of the list of applicants for the right to represent Russia in the Eurovision song contest, it was noted that the songs were 9 o'clock Moscow night (Venger Collective), The happiest man (Tim Rox), Love is Independent (Polina Griffis ), “I love you” (“Quatro”) violate the “October 1 rule”, according to which a competitive song should not be performed publicly until October 1 of the previous year, and also partially Back to Love (Valeria) - a fragment from a piano concert was used in the refrain Tchaikovsky number 1 . [7]
Tim Rox said posting his song online is nothing more than “hacking skillful hands.” The song of Polina Griffis Love is Independent was disqualified , so in a short time the new song Cry For You was presented. The Quatro group announced the replacement of the song “I Love You” with “Love” [7] , but despite this, during the dress rehearsal on March 6, “Quatro” nevertheless performed the original composition. In the final of the qualifying competition “Quatro” they performed the song “Answer with love” . The producer of the singer Valeria, Joseph Prigogine, confirmed the fact that in the song Back to Love there is a fragment from the composition of Tchaikovsky : [8]
Yes, a fragment from Tchaikovsky was used in Valeria’s song. But this is instrumental music that has not previously been published as a song. Such use is permissible. Before submitting this song to Eurovision, we specified all these details. And there is no theft here. Tchaikovsky was used by us absolutely legally.
Also, at the time of the announcement of the list of participants in the national finals, 11 tracks out of 15 violated the “3-minute rule”. For less than 3 minutes, only Breakdown (Arishata) and One more try (Thomas N'evergreen) sounded.
Contest Preparation
Promotour
The promotion tour of Anastasia Prikhodko, timed to participate in the competition, was originally planned to be combined with the tour of the singer Valery Meladze - it was assumed that she would perform at his concerts. [7] But later it was decided to abandon the promotion. Anastasia Prikhodko performed only at three concerts by Meladze: in Kiev and Kharkov. In addition, she performed the song “Mamo” at the gala concert of the Armenian award “Tashir-2009” as a guest.

Home Preparation
On March 12, 2009, the premiere of the final version of the song “Mamo ” took place on Russkoye Radio , in which it will be performed in the final of the competition. As Konstantin Meladze previously claimed [7] , the song was preserved in the Russian-Ukrainian version: all the verses and one chorus are performed in Russian, the rest are in Ukrainian. The duration of the song was reduced to 2 minutes. 49 s .
The director of the video for the song "Mamo" was Alan Badoev . Filming took place in Kiev. Initially, the premiere video was scheduled [7] on April 10, 2009, but then was postponed a week later. On April 19, 2009, the video clip for the song “Mamo” was presented in Ukraine on the Ukrainian music channel M1 in the program “ Ministry of Premier ”, and on April 21 in Russia on the music channel “ Muz-TV ”, which is the media partner of the First . The case of presentation of a video for a competitive song in another country before the home premiere is unique in the history of Eurovision. [7]
Due to the fact that Russia did not manage to submit a ready-made video clip to the organizing committee of the contest, a video from the national selection was used as a preview . [9]
On April 28, a new version of the singer’s official website, designed specifically for the competitive promotion , began work. Prikhodko also recorded radio promotions representing her song in 27 European languages. [10]
Euro Weeks
The first individual rehearsal of the competition number Anastasia Prikhodko held May 9 , after which the first press conference was held . During the rehearsal, which lasted 40 minutes, the singer performed her song “Mamo” four times.
The second individual rehearsal took place on May 10 . This time, the performer rehearsed already in a dress in which she will perform in the finale [11] , and the film that will accompany the singer’s performance was also shown for the first time. The subsequent press conference began with a re-demonstration of the film. The Russian delegation promised to make a number of changes to the issue. [eleven]
On the same day, May 10, Anastasia Prikhodko performed the song “Mamo” at a concert dedicated to the opening of the Eurovision Song Contest 2009, which took place in the Manege .
From May 9 to 11, for the first time in the history of the Eurovision Song Contest 2009, the press center in Moscow invited reporters to choose the best sites and blogs for Eurovision participants. The site of the Russian participant Anastasia Prikhodko won the nomination "Best site design." [12]
On May 13, a Russian party was held at Eurodom. The hosts of the evening were Dmitry Shepelev and Mark Tishman . The party was attended by representatives of the Russian show business, as well as some participants in the competition. [13]
Final
Speech
The competition number of Anastasia Prikhodko looked as follows. The performer in a white dress stood on the stage and sang a song, and behind her a video was broadcast on the screens where her face was shot, which gradually grew old and sang along with her. In addition to the singer herself, five backing vocalists dressed in costumes with national elements were also present on the stage.
Worked on the background :
- leader: Janik Fayziev
- Director : Stas Dovzhik
- makeup : Peter Gorshenin, FX Design Group
- operator : Maxim Osadchy
Voting
Jury
The members of the Russian professional jury were: [14]
- Igor Matvienko
- Maria Katz
- Tamara Gverdtsiteli
- Alexander Lunev
- Elena Kiper
Initially, Philip Kirkorov was appointed chairman of the jury, but he soon resigned and was replaced by Igor Matvienko. [15] Philip Kirkorov explained his refusal by the fact that since he takes a very active part in the life of the contest itself and communicates with some participants, suspicions may arise that his refereeing is biased. [16]
Semifinal
As the country that won last year, Russia automatically reached the final. Initially, according to the draw, she was supposed to vote in the second semifinal with France , but then Spain joined.

In the final round of the contest, Russia announced the results of voting at number 11, after Israel . Actress Ingeborga Dapkunaite acted as the "herald" from Russia.

On May 18, Vice President of the First National Channel of Ukraine Roman Nedzelsky announced the falsification of the results of Ukraine’s vote in relation to Russia. He said that in reality the Ukrainian professional jury did not give a single point to the Russian participant Anastasia Prikhodko, therefore she could not get 8 points announced live: [17] [18]
2 minutes before the broadcast we were told that we should voice this figure - 8 - like voices from Ukraine! We were honestly shocked and did not want to do this. There is an ordinary manipulation. It is clear that Norway objectively won, and there are no questions. But where did Prikhodko come from Ukraine 8 points ?!
On May 19, the European Broadcasting Union rejected the allegations and explained that the vote count was in accordance with the rules. The executive controller of the Eurovision Song Contest Svante Stokselius commented on this refusal: [19]
The voting results announced in the final of the competition were absolutely correct, and voting was carried out in full accordance with the rules of the competition. The topic that was raised with the results of voting in Ukraine was the result of a misunderstanding about how exactly the results of the jury and audience voting were brought together.
Also in this statement was the transcript of the vote of Ukraine. In particular, the audience gave Anastasia Prikhodko 12 points, and the jury - 0. Nevertheless, in total this gave Anastasia Prikhodko the third result of voting in Ukraine, which gave the singer 8 points in the total final score.
Criticism
The choice of Anastasia Prikhodko as the representative of Russia at the Eurovision turned into a scandal . The husband and producer of the singer Valeria, who took second place in the selection, Joseph Prigozhin demanded to annul the decision of the professional jury and conduct a re-selection: [20]
I want to say, not as a producer of singer Valeria, but as a citizen of Russia ... We need to make new elections and send another person to Eurovision, because a song performed in Ukrainian has nothing to do with Russia.
The position of Prigogine was supported by one of the members of the professional jury Maxim Fadeev . [21] But on March 11, Joseph Prigozhin announced that he would not dispute the rival’s victory. [22]
On the same day, the Liberal Democratic Party declared that Anastasia Prikhodko was damaging the prestige of the Russian Federation. So commented on this statement, the head of the party faction Igor Lebedev: [23]
The point is not even that she is a citizen of another state, although this fact in itself causes indignation among our voters, but the fact is that she is known for her far-right nationalist views, which she has repeatedly stated in the media. [24]
It was about the statements of Anastasia Prikhodko, voiced during her participation in the television show "Star Factory". Critics saw in their content a racist and anti-Semitic orientation, which the singer categorically denied. [25]
Singer and producer Philip Kirkorov expressed a different point of view regarding the choice of Anastasia Prikhodko as the representative of Russia: [26]
This is primarily a choice of the people who voted with an unprecedented percentage of votes - 25%. Whoever says anything, this is the choice of the population of our country.
If a Canadian citizen Celine Dion represented Switzerland at the time, she won, Dima Koldun, who won the Russian Star Factory, to whom I wrote a song, represented Belarus, if I am a Russian citizen, he wrote a song for Ukrainian singer Ani Lorak, why is it impossible for a Ukrainian citizen to represent Russia?
On March 31, the World Coordinating Council of Russian Compatriots (VKSRS) approved the candidacy of Ukrainian singer Anastasia Prikhodko as Russia's representative at Eurovision 2009 and called for her to vote for her at the competition. Andrei Zarenkov, who is a member of the VKSRS, answering the question why Anastasia Prikhodko, who is a citizen of Ukraine, is considered by the VKSRS as a compatriot, said that, according to the singer, she does not consider herself “only Ukrainian or Russian”. According to him, “as a compatriot, people of the Russian world perceive her abroad”, and the very concept of “Russian world” makes it possible for people like Anastasia Prikhodko to speak on behalf of Russia. [27]
According to some media reports, the 11th place of Anastasia Prikhodko in the final is due to the fact that she was obviously not prepared for victory in the competition, having made a number of significant mistakes: [28]
... 11th place of our participant is a consequence of a chain of mistakes made by no means alone.
... Eurovision is a show. A good show does not happen without good advertising. The Russians successfully performed at the competition only after a massive promotion. Alsou, for example, the first "breakthrough" of the European blockade, almost a year before the final, skated around the Old World with a promotional tour. Pictures of Bilan last year hung all over Belgrade. But Prikhodko just flashed a couple of times on TV, and that’s all ...
