Biography
He graduated from the historical and philological faculty of Petrograd University .
In 1928, he was accused of anti-Soviet activities. , in that he was a member of the illegal anti-Soviet circle “ABDEM”, which was in connection with the head of the “ Brotherhood of Seraphim of Sarov ” I. M. Andreevsky , that is, in the crimes provided for in article 58-1 1 of the Criminal Code RSFSR .
In 1929 he was sentenced to 5 years in prison, which he served on Solovki . In 1931 he was released and sent to Kotlas for the remaining term. Upon returning to Leningrad, he taught at the university. In 1937 he was again arrested, but was soon released [1] .
The Department of Classical Philology of Leningrad State University took shape organizationally in 1932 under the guidance of Professor O. M. Freidenberg . A. V. Boldyrev joined the department along with I. I. Tolstoy , S. V. Melikova-Tolstoy, I. M. Tronsky , Y. M. Borovsky , A. I. Dovatur .
In besieged Leningrad, he was entrusted with the responsible work of air defense at the university.
He was married to Mariinsky Theater accompanist Marianna Fedorovna Gramenitskaya (1904-1998). Daughter - ethnographer S. A. Maretin (1929–2013) [2] .
Scientific activity
Translator of Plato and other ancient authors into Russian. He also translated from German ( Adelbert von Chamisso . The amazing story of Peter Schlemil. L., 1936). Many of his translations and works (translations of Plutarch and Anthony Diogenes , essay on Hellenistic literature, the article “Hector and Scamander”, reports on Pushkin and “The Word on Igor's Regiment ” and others) remain unpublished.
In collaboration with Ya. M. Borovsky, he wrote a Latin language textbook for universities (1940), which was then reprinted several times.
