History

The construction of the Kayerkan settlement was connected with exploration in 1940 and the subsequent (since 1943) exploitation of a coal deposit (work was begun by the Gulag prisoners, in the area of modern Kayerkan there was one of the Norilag camp camps). Initially, the Kayerkan coal was mined in mines , and in 1962 the exploitation of the Kayerkan coal mine began . In 1957, Kayerkan received the status of a working village .

Further development of the Kayerkan settlement was associated with the construction and start of operation (in 1979) of the Nadezhda Metallurgical Plant , one of the largest enterprises of the Norilsk Mining and Metallurgical Combine (now the Polar Division of MMC Norilsk Nickel . In 1982, Kayerkan received city status. In 2004 Kayerkan was deprived of the status of a city, was included in the city line of the city of Norilsk [2] and in 2005 was transformed into the administrative district of the city of Norilsk [3] .

Currently, in connection with the conversion of the Norilsk Combine to gas fuel in the 1970s, coal in Kayerkan is mined only in very small quantities necessary for some technological processes. The main place for coal mining is Kayerkansky coal mine-2 (KUR-2) south of Kayerkan.
