Ferdinand Kittel is primarily known as a Kannada language scholar. He compiled the first Kannada-English dictionary , which is now an important source for learning the Kannada language. Although many Kannada dictionaries were compiled by the Indians themselves from the 10th century, these traditional dictionaries tended to ignore dialects. Kittel, when compiling his vocabulary, traveled throughout Karnataka and communicated with representatives of different regions and social classes. Kittel's dictionary contains seventy thousand words, including a large number of dialect vocabulary [1] .
In addition to the dictionary, Kittel wrote a grammar of the Kannada language [2] . In addition, he wrote poetry in this language.
