Population

At the census of Great Britain in 2001, 15,160 people indicated Russia as their country of birth. [2] According to estimates published by the National Statistical Office in 2009, the estimated UK resident population born in Russia is about 32,000. [3] About 41,000 Russians call London their home, and some estimate that tens of thousands of Russians live in London, including students, refugees, expired people, and illegal immigrants. [4] You can often hear such nicknames in London as "Londongrad" and "Moscow-on-the-Thames" ( Moscow on the Thames ). [5] In London and the Southeast, there are a number of Russian schools aimed at teaching Russian culture and language to children of Russian immigrants. [6]

Former Russian ambassador to the UK, Yuri Fedotov, said local Russians are becoming victims of xenophobia , and that police often refuse to investigate these incidents. [7]

The total number of people with Russian roots in the UK is close to 300,000. [eight]
