Garfield began his career on the stage and television. He made his debut on the big screen with a role in Lions for the Lambs (2007), and in the same year won the BAFTA Television Award for his role in Boy A.
Garfield became known to the public in 2010, with supporting roles in the films " Social Network " and " Do not Let Me Go ", which brought him two nominations for the BAFTA Award , a nomination for the Golden Globe , as well as the Saturn Award. The role of Spider-Man in the eponymous homology of Mark Webb (2012-2014) brought Garfield a worldwide reputation. In 2016, Garfield starred in two critically acclaimed dramas, Conscientious and Silent . The role of Desmond Doss in the first of the films earned him nominations for Academy Award, Golden Globe and BAFTA for Best Actor.
Garfield played the role of Biff in the revival of the Broadway production of Arthur Miller ’s play The Death of a Salesman in 2012, for which he was nominated for the Tony Award in the category Best Supporting Actor in a Play . In 2017, he played the role of Prior Walter in the production of Angels in America at the Royal National Theater in London , for which he was nominated for the Laurence Olivier Award for Best Actor . In 2018, he returned to the same role on Broadway, for which he received the Tony Award for Best Actor in a Play .
Early years
Garfield was born in Los Angeles , California [1] . His mother, Lynn (née Hilman), is from Essex , England , and his father, Richard Garfield, is from California [2] [3] . His paternal grandparents were also from the UK [4] . Garfield's parents moved from Los Angeles to the UK when he was three years old and he grew up in Epsom , Surrey [2] [5] [6] . Garfield's father is a Jew ; Garfield himself was raised outside of any religion and calls himself “ agnostic - pantheist ” [7] , but also considers himself a Jew [8] . His father's parents were immigrants from Jewish families who moved to London from Eastern Europe ( Poland , Russia , Romania ), and changed their surname from “Garfinkel” to “Garfield” [4] [9] .
Garfield's parents previously owned a small interior design company; his mother works as an assistant teacher in kindergarten, and his father is the head coach at a swimming school [10] [11] . He also has an older brother who works as a doctor [12] . In childhood, Garfield was a gymnast and swimmer, as well as an avid philatelist [3] [10] . Initially, he planned to study business, but later became interested in acting. Garfield studied at Priory Preparatory Schools in and City of London Freemen's School before entering the Royal School of Drama and Oratory , University of London , which he graduated in 2004 [10] [13] [14] .
Career
2004–2011: Career Start and Breakthrough
At the age of 9, Garfield began taking acting classes in Guildford , Surrey, and appeared in the production of the Bugsy Malone Youth Theater [12] .
Personal life
Garfield has dual citizenship of the USA and Great Britain [15] . According to him, he feels “equally at home” both in the USA and in Great Britain, and also “enjoys the diversity of cultural existence”. Garfield prefers not to publicly discuss the details of his personal life [16] .
Since 2011, Garfield met with the partner in the film "The New Spider-Man ", actress Emma Stone [17] . At the end of 2015, the couple broke up [18] [19] [20] .
In the fall of 2018, it became known about the romantic relationship of the actor with the famous singer Rita Ora [21] .
