Biography

Born in the family of the Jewish entrepreneur Israel Markovich Brodsky . After the death of his father, he headed the Alexander Sugar Mills Association , which controlled more than a quarter of the total sugar production in the Russian Empire.

It is known as a philanthropist: it was used to keep a Jewish hospital in Kiev, a Jewish education institution; also financed institutions of citywide importance - the Bacteriological Institute, the Bessarabian Covered Market , supported the development of the tram service.

The choral synagogue , the largest in Kiev, was erected at his expense. The building was erected in 1897-1898 in his estate.

He was the initiator and one of the sponsors of the construction of the Polytechnic Institute in Kiev.

In 1900, at the World Exhibition in Paris, Brodsky received the French Order of the Legion of Honor for the high quality products of his factories.

He was a member of the St. Petersburg International Commercial Bank Board, Director of the Kiev Water Supply Society, Managing Director and Member of the Society of the Flour Mill, founder and Chairman of the Board of the Second Steamship Company for the Dnieper and its tributaries, member of the Kiev Mutual Credit Society Council.

Died Sept. 19, 1904 from diabetes in Basel; September 24, his body was brought to Kiev. The funeral was organized on the same day by the choral synagogue. The entire facade of the synagogue was draped with mourning ribbons, and above the entrance there was an inscription: "Virtue is marching ahead of it."

Brodsky was buried in a marble family crypt in the Jewish section of the Lukyanovka cemetery (the grave was not preserved), and the governor, commander of the military district, the mayor participated in the funeral procession. In gravestone speech, the famous lawyer Lev Kupernik called the deceased "the best of the Jews." As Kiev newspapers wrote, about 150 wreaths were sent, of which ten were made of silver.

Lazarus had no sons (there were four daughters) and his brother Leo became head of the dynasty after his death. Valentina's daughter in exile was married to Marc Chagall .
