Mantsu, Giacomo

Giacomo Manzu (Manzu [1] ; Italian. Giacomo Manzù ; 1908 - 1991 ) - Italian sculptor. He gained recognition in the West, but thanks to the communist ideology, he was also highly appreciated by Soviet art criticism. Honorary member of the Academy of Arts of the USSR (1967), laureate of the International Lenin Prize "For the consolidation of peace between peoples" (1966).

Biography

The son of a shoemaker.

The training in painting and sculpture was led by Gian Bettino Chignaroli at the Academy of Fine Arts.

Despite his atheism, he was a personal friend of Pope John XXIII and performed a number of religious works for St. Peter's Basilica in Rome , as well as projects in the USA and Japan . He worked in Paris , Rome, New York , Detroit .

His sculpture “Cardinal” (1955) is in the International Gallery of Modern Art in Venice , and the sculpture “Susanna” (1961) is in the National Gallery of Modern Art in Rome. In 1963, Manzu completed six reliefs for the "Gate of Death" of St. Peter's Basilica in Rome. Several of his works are in the State Hermitage [2] .

In 1970 he created a monument to Vladimir Lenin on Capri .
