Biography

Jose Joaquin de Olmedo studied in Peru .

In his youth, he wrote anacreontic and bucolic lyrics , created the lyric-epic poem “Victory at Junin”. “Song of Bolivar” (published in 1825), which brought him fame. [3] .

Actively participated in the struggle for the independence of Ecuador [4] .

On October 9, 1820, Olmedo and the patriots who supported him declared Guayaquil's independence from Spain. Olmedo was the only president of the Free State of Guayaquil . Subsequently, this territory was nevertheless included by Simon Bolivar into Great Colombia .

In 1830 - 1831 was vice president of Ecuador.

After the overthrow of President Juan José Flores in June 1845, José Joaquín de Olmedo became chairman of the Provisional Government of Ecuador. He left his post on December 8, 1845, transferring authority to Vicente Ramon Roque .

In honor of Jose Joaquin de Olmedo, a football club from the city of Riobamba , the champion of Ecuador in 2000, is named.

The Ecuadorian poet José Olmedo was honored to be immortalized in stone in his homeland. But given the meager finances, the Ecuadorian government decided to purchase a used statue of the English poet Byron.
