Kinds
See text

The abbreviation of the generic name in industrial and amateur floriculture is Pna. [2]

The systematic position of the genus is not well-established. Some taxonomists [3] attribute the genus Pafinia to the subtribe Stanhopeinae , the tribe Maxillarieae , and the subfamily Epidendra .

The genus does not have an established Russian name, in the Russian-speaking sources the scientific name Paphinia is usually used.

Etymology

The scientific name of the genus comes from one of the names ( epicles ) of the ancient Greek goddess Aphrodite - Paphia ( Greek Paphia ) [4] , used in ancient times by the inhabitants of the city of Paphos ( Greek Πάφος ), from the island of Cyprus , where there was a temple of general Greek significance.

Range

The genus consists of approximately 18 species , distributed in America from the southern regions of Guatemala , in Costa Rica , Ecuador , Bolivia . In Brazil, it is found only in the two northern states of Amazonas and Para .

Research History

The genus was first described in 1843 by John Lindley . The first species he studied in 1836 (now known as Paphinia cristata ) was described under the name Maxillaria cristata [5] . In 1883, George Bentham revised the taxonomy of these plants and transferred the known species to the genus Lycaste , but this classification was not accepted.

In the last decades of the 20th century , new information has been obtained on the genus of these plants (15 of the currently known species have been described since 1983). Recent DNA studies have shown the phylogenetic affinity of the genus Pafinia to Horichia Jenny , Houlletia Brongn. and Schlimmia Planch. & Linden .

Description

Medium sized plants with small ovoid pseudobulbs and with two or more leaves . Flowers of some species of this genus can reach a diameter of up to 20 cm and are considered very large, taking into account the size of the plants themselves.

Plants of this genus are considered rare.

In Culture

Due to the large and spectacular flowers, papinias are often found in botanical gardens and private orchid collections. Not easy to maintain group.
Most of the species belong to the warm and moderate temperature group . Light requirements - shadow \ partial shade. They do not like temperature drops. Most of the species at lower temperatures are susceptible to fungal and bacterial diseases . All plants are small to medium sized, but with very large flowers. It is watered sparingly throughout the year, avoiding complete drying of the substrate . The substrate is moisture-absorbing. Humidity 60–80%.
During the growth period, they need plentiful watering. After the maturation of new pseudobulbs before the start of growth of peduncles, watering is reduced. For planting, use blocks , baskets or pots.
