During his 21-year playing career, he spent 14 years in the NBA and the last seven years in the Italian Serie A. Macadou is one of the few players who won both the NBA championship titles and the European Cup (Euroleague) [1] . He later won three more NBA titles in 2006, 2012 and 2013, as an assistant coach for the Miami Heat .
Early years
Macadou grew up in Greensboro , North Carolina . His mother, Vandalia, taught at his elementary school, and his father, Robert, was a curator at the University of North Carolina . Macadou attended Ben L. Smith High School, where he not only practiced basketball and athletics, but also played in the orchestra as a saxophonist [2] .
As a high school student, he led his Smith school to the state semi-finals in basketball, and also set a new state record for 6,7 inches high in athletics, defeating his future North Carolina teammate, Bobby Jones .
College Career
After graduating from high school, Macada initially lacked the academic grades required by the colleges of Division I, so he decided to enter the University of Vincennes (Vincennes, Indiana ). The University of Vincennes won the NJCAA Division I men's basketball championship in 1970. Macadou scored 27 points in the championship final.
In Vincennes, Macadou scored an average of 19.3 points and made 10 rebounds in the 1969/1970 season and 25.0 points and 11.0 rebounds in the 1970/1971 season [3] [2] .
Macadou played for the US team in the summer of 1971 at the Pan American Games , gaining an average of 11.0 points [4] .
“In fact, we did not recruit him,” said trainer Dean Smith of North Carolina. “His mother called us and said that all other schools are recruiting him. Why are we not doing this? ” [5] .
Macadou entered the University of North Carolina in 1971. He was the only NJCAA player Dean Smith had taken in his entire career. [5] In the 1971/1972 season, Macadou, playing with Bobby Jones , led the University of North Carolina's basketball team to 26 wins and 5 losses in the regular season and to the Final Four of the NCAA Division I. Macadou scored an average of 19.5 points and made 10.1 rebounds per game. He was part of the NCAA All-American Men's Basketball Team . He also received the title of MVP Atlantic Coast Conference [6] .
Referring to family difficulties, Macadou received an early right to the 1972 NBA draft , in accordance with the “difficulties” clause that existed before 1977. Macadou consulted with coach Dean Smith, who supported his desire to play in the NBA [2] [7] .
Macadou said: “When I left, many people were very angry and upset. But Dean blessed me. He told me: “If they are going to offer you such money, I think you should leave to help your family. I had his blessing. My mother was categorically against it, ”MacAdou added,“ but my father and Dean Smith were the guys who made me move. ” [8]
Professional career
1972 American Basketball Association and NBA Draft
Macadou received an early right to the 1972 NBA draft . Nevertheless, it was rumored that Macadou had signed a contract with the Virginia Squires Basketball Club after a “secret” project by the American Basketball Association , in which the names of those who were chosen were not made public. Despite the fact that the contract was not signed, it is reported that the NBA commissioner, Walter Kennedy , advised the NBA teams not to choose Macada [9] . Other reports stated that the contract was signed and terminated because Macadou was too young to sign it and that the Buffalo Braves had somehow learned about it [10] . Later, Macadou was indeed marked as No. 1 in the 1972 ABA Draft by the American Basketball Association [11] [12] [13] .
Buffalo Braves
As a result, Macadou was selected in the first round under number 2 by the Buffalo Braves team (now Los Angeles Clippers ), after rumors that the negotiations on the contract between Portland Trail Blazers and Macadou were unsuccessful [14 ] . Larry Martin was selected by Portland under number 1 [15] . Macadou signed a contract with the Braves and quickly became one of the main NBA players. He won the 1973 NBA Rookie of the Year award, and was also included in the 1st NBA Rookie Team . He earned the first of three consecutive NBA titles won in the second season.
Macadou was disappointed with Buffalo’s unsuccessful performance in his first season, saying: “And here I am at Buffalo, we were on our way to losing 61 games and we had no players. My wife could overtake these people ” [11] .
His second season (1973/1974) remains the last time the NBA player scored an average of 30.0 points and 15.0 rebounds per game. Macadou was led by the NBA by the percentage of hits from the game - 54.7%. This year, he first participated in the NBA All-Star Game .
In the 1974/1975 season, he was awarded the "Most Valuable NBA Player" award, gaining an average of 34.5 points, 14.1 rebounds and 2.12 blocks per game, while having a hit percentage of 51.2% and 80, 5% of the free throw line. He also led the league in a fan vote for the 1975 all-star game , gaining 98,325 votes [16] [17] . Anthony Davis spent the day 19 days before his 23rd birthday with a score of 59 points and 20 rebounds, and Macadou, being at a younger age, in turn, was the only player who scored 50 points and 20 rebounds per match.
The Macadou style was very modern for its time. Despite being a “big man,” 6 feet 9 inches (2.06 m) tall, he had no problem shooting from the perimeter (near and long range), which in turn made him almost insurmountable by force in attack.
On December 9, 1976, the Buffalo Braves exchanged Macada and Tom McMillen for the New York Knicks for John Gianelli and cash compensation [18] .
In 334 games at Buffalo, Macadou averaged 28.2 points, made 12.7 rebounds, 2.6 assists, 2.4 blocks and 1.1 interceptions [18] .
New York Knicks
In 52 matches with the Knicks in the 1976/1977 season, Macadou scored an average of 26.7 points, 12.7 rebounds, 2.7 assists, 1.3 blocks and 1.2 interceptions, playing under the guidance of a coach, Red Holtzman , who He was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1986. This season, the Knicks ended with the result of 40 wins and 42 losses and did not get into the playoffs. Moving to the Knicks, Macadou played with future partners in the Hall of Fame : Clyde Fraser , Earl Monroe , Spencer Heywood , Bill Bradley and Phil Jackson [19] .
The 1977/1978 season, the Knicks spent 43 victories and 39 defeats, under the leadership of Willis Reed , the new head coach. Macadou scored an average of 26.5 points, made 12.8 rebounds, 3.8 assists, 1.6 blocks and 1.3 interceptions in 79 games. The Knicks beat the Cleveland Cavaliers 2-0 in the playoffs at the Eastern Conference , and then lost to the Philadelphia Seventi Sixers with Julius Irving with a score of 4-0 in the semifinals of the Eastern Conference. Macadou scored an average of 34.0 points, made 9.0 rebounds and 2.0 assists in a series with Cavaliers and 18.8 points, 10.0 rebounds, 4.8 assists 2.3 blocks and 1.5 interceptions in series with Philadelphia [20] [21] [22] .
In 1978/1979, the Knicks fired Willis Reed and hired Red Holtzman again in the middle of the season. In 40 games with the Knicks, Macadou averaged 26.9 points, made 9.5 rebounds and 3.2 assists. On February 12, 1979, the Knicks traded Macada for Tom Barker from the Boston Celtics , as well as a choice in the 1st round of the 1979 draft ( Bill Cartwright was later chosen), in the 1st round of the 1979 draft ( Larry was later selected Demic ) and the 1st round of the 1979 draft (later Sly Williams was chosen) [18] [23] .
In a 171 game with the Knicks, Macadou scored an average of 26.7 points, 12.0 rebounds, 3.3 assists, 1.4 blocks and 1.3 interceptions [18] .
Boston Celtics (1979)
Under the guidance of a playing coach, Dave Cowens , Boston ended the season with 29 wins and 53 losses. Macadou scored an average of 20.6 points, made 7.1 rebounds, but played less time in the first team, with Cowens, Cedric Maxwell , Marvin Barnes and Rick Roby [24] .
After the season ended, Boston fired Cowens as a coach, replacing him with Bill Fitch . Larry Bird was selected in the draft, and Macadou was sold to the Detroit Pistons [18] [25] .
On September 6, 1979, the Celtics traded the Detroit Pistons Macadou for 2 picks in the first round of the 1980 draft (Ricky Brown and Joe Barry Carroll were later selected).
Detroit Pistons
The new 1979/1980 season, which Macadou spent on the Pistons team under the guidance of coach Dick Vitale, was over with 16 wins and 66 losses. Having played in 58 games with Bob Legnier , who was inducted into the Hall of Fame , Macadou scored an average of 21.1 points and 8.1 rebounds [26] [27] .
On March 11, 1981, the Pistons refused to participate in Macadou, who played only six games with the team in the 1980/1981 season [18] .
On February 19, 1981, Macadou, who was injured, stated that he was healthy and asked to be reinstated in the Pistons starting lineup. Coach Scotty Robertson rejected his request, saying that Macadou had not practiced for a long time and was not in good physical shape. Macadou asked permission to return home, and he was allowed to leave. The next day, Pistons CEO Jack McCloskey notified Macada not to return to the team until the end of the season. The contract with Macadou was canceled [28] .
New Jersey Nets
On March 13, 1981, Macadou signed a contract with the New Jersey Nets as a free agent. He played ten games with the Nets. On average, his playing time per match was 15 minutes. The Nets finished the season by winning 24 games and losing 58 [29] .
Los Angeles Lakers
On December 24, Macadou was traded to the Los Angeles Lakers , and in return the Nets were given the right to choose in the second round of the 1983 draft. Macadou did not play for the Nets in the 1980/1981 season, and Mitch Kupchak was injured at the Lakers [30] .
“When the 1981/1982 season began, I was in a contractual dispute with the New Jersey Nets . However, I still could not play because I was recovering from an off-season operation to remove bone spurs from my leg. There were times when I he stood on crutches for several months and thought that my career was over, "said Macadou. The Lakers have just lost a key player, Mitch Kupchak, who broke his knee. In the short term, they hoped that I could replace him. In the long run, I think they hoped that I could help the team move in the right direction " [31] .
Macadou had an unforgettable end to his NBA career. He won two NBA titles with the Los Angeles Lakers in 1982 and 1985, coming on as a substitute. He played with the Lakers' golden line-up - Magic Jones , Karim Abdul-Jabbar and James Worthy .
In the 1981/1982 season, the Lakers won the NBA Championships, thanks in large part to Pat Riley , who took on coaching after Paul Westhead left. Riley and Macadou thus began a professional relationship that lasted decades. In 41 games with the Lakers in the regular season, Macadou scored an average of 9.6 points and 3.9 rebounds in 18.2 minutes of playing time. In 1982, in the NBA finals, Macadou scored an average of 16.3 points in 27 minutes of playing time, when the Lakers defeated the Philadelphia Seventi Sixers with a score of 4–2. Throughout the playoffs, Macadou averaged 16.7 points and made 6.8 rebounds [32] [33] [18] .
Macadou extended the agreement with the Lakers in the 1982/1983 season, refusing the Philadelphia's better offer [34] .
In the next two seasons, Macadou scored an average of 15.0 points in the 1982/1983 season and 13.1 points in the 1983/1984 season. The team's results for these seasons were: 58-24 and 54-28. Macadou played in the 1983 playoffs with a severely injured hamstring. “If we had Macadou healthy, we would have a chance,” said Riley's coach after losing to the Philadelphia Seventi Sixers in the NBA finals in 1983 [35] .
Macadou scored an average of 12.5 points and made 5.5 rebounds in the 1984 NBA Finals , but the Lakers lost the Boston Celtics with a score of 4: 3 [36] .
Lakers assisted Macad in the NBA Championship in 1984/1985, defeating Boston 4–2 in the NBA Finals. Macadou was the 6th person to score an average of 8.2 points and made 3.0 rebounds in the 1985 NBA Finals and scored 11.4 points in the playoffs [37] .
“For me, this was a great opportunity to play with Karim and Magic,” said Macadou about his stay at the Lakers. For the first time in my career, I had a chance to win the championship. But I didn’t even think that I would get up from the bench. It just so happened. They had no one to hold me, and I dealt with it because I had never been in a team of champions. And I was never one of those who could cause decay or something like that ” [38] .
Philadelphia Seventi Sixers
On January 31, 1986, Macadou signed a contract with Philadelphia as a free agent. [39] He ended his career in the NBA, having won 29 games for the “Philadelphia” in the 1985/1986 season], gaining an average of 10.1 points. He went on the field with such great players as Julius Irving , Moses Malone and Charles Barkley . Macadou averaged 10.8 points in two playoffs playing for Philadelphia [40] [41] .
Italian League (1987-1992)
Macadou then played in the Italian team Olympia Milano , he was one of the best American players to ever play in the European Cup (now known as Euroleague ). In 1988, he was recognized as the most valuable player in the Euroleague Final Four .
Thanks to Maquad, Olympia Milano won the title of Serie A and the European Cup (twice), gaining an average of 26.1 points and 10.2 rebounds per game. He later played for the Italian clubs Filanto Forlì (1990–1992) and Timsystem Fabriano (1992]]), and then ended his career in 1992 at the age of 41 [42] .
Macadou scored an average of 27.0 points per match in the Italian League, playing in 201 games [43] .
Coaching career
Macadou has worked at Miami Heat for 24 years, starting in 1995 . He has been an assistant coach for 19 seasons, working under the leadership of Pat Riley (1995-2003, 2005-2008), Stan Van Gundy (2003-2005) and Eric Spoelstra (2008-2013), winning three NBA championships. Since then, he has worked for the past five seasons as a Miami scout [44] .
Macadou came to Maimi Heat when Pat Riley, who had been his coach for two Lakers championships in the 1980s, left the New York Knicks to become the Heath head coach in 1995. Riley immediately turned to Macad with a proposal to join the coaching staff [45] .
