Biography
Patrick Hamilton came from a Scottish aristocratic Hamilton family, his maternal great-grandfather was King James II . Patrick received his education at the University of Paris , where he fell under the influence of new ideas of humanism and reformation . In 1527 he went to Germany , where he visited Martin Luther . Under the influence of Luther's ideas, Patrick Hamilton, after returning to Scotland in late 1527, began to preach the renewal of the church. In 1528 , Hamilton was accused of heresy and summoned to a church court led by the Archbishop of St Andrews . At the trial, Patrick refused to renounce his beliefs and was sentenced to death. February 29, 1528 Patrick Hamilton was burned at the stake [2] .
For Scotland, in principle, brutal repressions against the Protestants were not characteristic and the execution of Hamilton is a significant exception.
