Filmography Madonna

Madonna at the Berlin Film Festival presents her debut directorial film " Dirt and Wisdom ", 2008

This list contains filmography of the Madonna . Madonna’s acting and director’s career was less successful than her musical one (she became the champion in the number of antipreviews “Golden Raspberries for the Worst Role” ). She starred in more than twenty films and in 1997 won the award for playing the successful movie musical Evita in her first prestigious Golden Globe Award .

“Singing songs, writing fairy tales and making films is about the same thing: every time you have to tell stories.”
- Madonna in an interview , 2012 [1]

Shortly after the failure of Guy Ritchie ’s husband’s film “ Gone ” (2002), the singer announced that she was ending her acting career in cinema in order to “not expose hundreds of people who are involved in making the film” because of her reputation as a bad actress [2] .

In 2007, she wrote the script and made her first film as a director - the film “ Dirt and Wisdom .” In an interview with Gus Van Sant for Interview magazine in 2010, she talked about her long-standing love for European cinema, especially neorealism [3] . Madonna's films are British in spirit, content and production, as she contrasts herself with Hollywood [4] . Having removed the second picture “ WE. We believe in love ”, she admitted that even on the set, music for her remains the main [5] .

Actress

In 1979, Madonna starred in the amateur film "The Specific Victim " in the role of a repentant sadomasochist who is raped in the toilet by a maniac. The unsuccessful amateur film was far from pornographic , but with the filing of a "sensational" press, it created a skepticism about it as a former porn star . According to biographers, this in the future affected her belated recognition as a musician [7] . In 1985, the singer starred in an episode of the film " Visual Search ". The soundtrack of the picture contained the song " Crazy For You ", the second single for Madonna's No. 1 in the United States [8] . Madonna appeared in the movie “ Desperately Looking for Susan ” and this role was praised by critics. The song “ Into The Groove ” sounded in the film - the first single number 1 in the UK for the singer, and the author was also Madonna (together with Bray). This created a good attitude towards her in the English press, and for many years.

“I felt rebellious nature. She is all - the embodiment of rebellion. "
- Director, famous for the Red Revolutionary War film, Warren Beatty about Madonna [9]

In 1990, a movie with Madonna " Dick Tracy " was released and the soundtrack to it was called I'm Breathless . The director of the picture is the famous lovelace Warren Beatty , who received a refusal from the singer to offer to marry after a year of relationship [10] . I'm Breathless contains songs by the famous composer Stephen Sondheim and the author's duet Madonna-Leonard. The singer first entered the territory of jazz and the Broadway musical , which critics regarded ambiguously. The most commercially successful of I'm Breathless was Vogue , topping the charts. [11] Recitative " Eng. ... ladies with an attitude; fellows that were in the mood ... ”was written by Madonna in an airplane as an illustration of the 30s, but became a characteristic of modernity [11] . In Russia, it is known as the epigraph of the first chapter of the book " Duhless ". The title of the book is the partially translated name of the character of the Madonna from the film - “Breathless” [12] .

In 1992, Madonna successfully starred in the movie " Their Own League " as a baseball player with the talking name May Mordabito. For the picture, she recorded the song “ This Used to Be My Playground ”, which became No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 [13] [14] . In 1993 , without even being awarded a release in cinemas, the video “The Dangerous Game ” was released by the cult art house director Ferrara with Madonna in the title role. The New York Times called the picture "angry and painful, where the pain seems real" [15] . According to biographers, The Dangerous Game contained the story of Sarah / Madonna about the rape that actually happened in 1978 [16] . The erotic thriller with the singer “ Body as evidence ” (1993) contained scenes of sadomasochism with binding and failed by critics and distributors [17] [18] .

In 2000, a movie was released with Madonna starring Best Friend . For the soundtrack to him, she recorded a cover hit “ American Pie ”. He became her first non-copyright No. 1 hit in the UK . At the end of 2001, a single was released for the James Bond film “ Die, but Not Now, ” under the eponymous title “ Die Another Day ”. For the episodic role in the film, the singer received “ Golden Raspberry ” in addition to the title of “Worst Actress of the Millennium” [19] . The song received opposite nominations: for “ Golden Globe ” in the category “Best Original Song” and for “Golden Raspberry” as “Worst Song” [20] . The next film, “ Gone with It, ” was crushed by critics and was released in the United Kingdom immediately on DVD [21] . So far, this is the last full-length picture of Madonna as an actress [22] .

Director

In 2007, Madonna Ciccone mastered a new profession of filmmaker , writing a script for part of the autobiographical film-parable “ Dirt and Wisdom ”. In the film, the hero tries to promote his rock band, while earning his living, then beating up masochists for money, then dressing as Margaret Thatcher . “Dirt and Wisdom” with Eugene Gudzem in the lead role gets to the Berlin Film Festival in the program “Panorama”, where he receives a rather cool reception of critics. Cinema critics positively noted only the music of the gypsy folk punk rock band Gogol Bordello and the self-presence of the protagonist, who bring originality and a Russian mat to the British non-profit picture [23] . In the same year, Madonna Ciccone produced and voiced the author’s behind-the-scenes text documentary on the disastrous state of affairs in the African country of Malawi , entitled “ I Am Because We Are ”, which was shown at the Tribeca festival in 2008 .

In December 2011, the film “ WE. We believe in love ”, where Madonna Ciccone acts as a director and scriptwriter [24] . The film receives devastating criticism, but the play of Andrea Riseborough in the role of Wallis Simpson and the soundtrack for the film evoke rave comments. [25] The film was mercilessly defeated by criticism for its excessive and unnecessary complexity, melodramatic and overloaded with details. The film was called "a chicken who imagines himself a peacock." As in the first picture with the music of the band “ Gogol Bordello ”, only the soundtrack of the Polish composer Abel Kozhenevski and the song “ Masterpiece ” by Madonna were positively evaluated [26] . Despite criticism and a failure at the box office, the picture was nominated for an Oscar for Best Costume Design. “Masterpiece” could not be nominated for this award, as it did not start simultaneously with the credits, but more than a minute later. This did not stop the song from winning the Golden Globe for Madonna in 2012. Kozhenevski was also nominated, but lost the soundtrack of " Artist ".

In early 2014, the singer announced the acquisition of rights and the beginning of work on the film adaptation of the best-selling American writer Rebecca Walker “Ada. A love story ” [27] .

Records

Documentary films about the singer’s concert tours are singled out in a special genre, the basis of which was laid by the first film about Bob Dylan ’s tour - rockmenaries.
