Club career

Charlie began his career at . In 1903 he moved to Grimsby Town , where he spent one season, playing 31 matches and scoring 4 goals.

In April 1904, Roberts moved to Manchester United for £ 600 - a significant amount for that time - and Ernest Mangnell , United head coach at that time, was actively involved in reinforcing the roster and had already spent large sums on transfer of players from Manchester City " Billy Meredith and Sandy Turnbull have been criticized for spending a lot on an under-skilled footballer. However, the transition of Roberts to United was extremely useful for the development of the team: Charlie was a strong, technical, fast central midfielder.

Roberts provoked the protests of the Football Association due to the fact that he put on short shorts for matches - above his knees. In 1904, the Football Association even issued a rule according to which players should wear shorts that cover their knees, but Roberts and several other players ignored this rule [1] .

In the 1905/06 season, Manchester United took 2nd place in the Second Division and entered the First Division. The team scored 90 goals in 38 matches, with only 28 goals conceded. A big role was played by a trio of midfielders - Charlie Roberts in the center, Dick Duckworth on the right and Alex Bell on the left. Due to the excellent form, which scored 22-year-old Roberts, he received a call to the England team in 1905.

Speaking as a central midfielder , Charlie helped United win the First Division in the 1907/08 and 1910/11 seasons , as well as the 1909 FA Cup . In 1912, Manchester City offered £ 1,500 for a Roberts transfer, but Manchester United refused. [2] However, soon after that, the head coach of Manchester United Ernest Mengnall moved to City. Roberts played for United until August 1913, playing a total of 302 matches for the team and scoring 23 goals [3] .

In August 1913, Charlie moved for an all-time high of £ 1,750 at Oldham Athletic , in which he also became a coach after the player’s career ended.

Charlie played 3 matches for the national team , becoming the first United player to be called up to England.

He died in the Royal Infirmary of Manchester after an unsuccessful operation on the skull, which he did because of constant headaches and dizziness.
