Aazaz [2] [3] [4] , also Azaz [5] [6] ( Arabic. أعزاز ) is a city in Syria , in the Aleppo governorate ; administrative center of the Aazaz district. Located in the north of the country, 10 km [ specify ] from the Turkish-Syrian border .

Most noteworthy is that on June 11, 1125, a battle broke out at Aazaz between the crusaders and Seljuks .
During the civil war in Syria, the city became a place of confrontation between the Syrian Kurds and Turkey [7] . In 2016, a fierce battle broke out out of town .
Geography
It is located about 50 km northwest of Aleppo (Aleppo) and 7 km from the border with Turkey [8] , at an altitude of 573 m above sea level [9] .
History
In 1030, the battle for Aazaz took place , in which the Byzantine emperor Roman III Argir was defeated. Soon the city was still captured by the Byzantines under the command of Niketas of Mistei.
On June 11, 1125 (or June 13), the crusader forces under the command of King Baldwin II of Jerusalem at the battle of Aazaz defeated the army of Seljuk Turks and lifted the siege of the city.
In 1118, Count of Edessa Joslen expelled from the city of Atabek Aleppo. The following year, the crusaders led by Roger Salerno were defeated in a “ battle on a bloody field ”.
Civil War
During the Civil War (2011–2016), the city repeatedly became the scene of fighting. Being a small city, Aazaz, nevertheless, has strategic importance as a key link on the road between Turkey and Aleppo - the second largest city in Syria [7] .
- 2012
On July 19, 2012, representatives of the Free Syrian Army reported the capture of the city as a result of three-week battles [10] .
- 2013
On the night of September 18, 2013, as a result of a 4-hour battle, the city was captured by ISIS . The capture was accompanied by the expulsion of detachments of the Free Army of Syria and the execution of hundreds of captured soldiers. [eleven]
- 2016
During the civil war, in early 2016, in the Aazaz region, clashes broke out between the Kurdish forces ( YPG ) and the Syrian rebels, which had a serious impact on the course of the conflict [12] .
- 2017
- January 7 in the city there was a terrorist attack - at least 60 dead, more than 70 injured [13] . According to the Turkish Anadolu agency, a car bomb was blown up near the courthouse of the Ahrar al-Sham group, which killed many militants of the movement [13] .
