History
Founded by Henry Morton Stanley in 1883. Originally called Stanleyville.
During the Congolese crisis of 1961, Stanleyville held headquarters for Mobutu , who opposed the central government of Lumumba . In 1964, in Stanleyville, the forces of the Belgian paratroopers carried out the Red Dragon operation to free the white hostages captured by the Simba militants. During the Second Congolese War, the city became the scene of military clashes. On August 23, 1998, Kisangani was captured by militants of the RKD [1] , who placed their residence here in 1999. On May 14, 2002, the Kisangani massacre was one of the most bloody events of the war.
Geography and Economics
Port on the Congo River below Stanley Falls . It is located 324 km south of Buta , 572 km southwest of Isiro and 696 km southwest of Bunia , at an altitude of 447 m above sea level [2] . The city has a train station, university and international airport. Kisangani has a university, a regional museum. Kisangani - the center of the agricultural region, the primary processing of agricultural raw materials (rice and cotton cleaning). Food, textile, chemical enterprises; woodworking, production of building materials.
