The library (from other Greek. Φωνή - “sound” and θήκη - “storage”) is an institution that collects and stores audio information on sound media for public and private use, as well as carries out reference and statistical work. Currently, the music library is also called private collections of musical and other audio material.
Types of Music Library
The state library is designed to ensure the safety and accessibility of all audio products, products released and issued by this state or having one or another relation to it, which may be in demand by listeners. In addition, the state library stores and provides access to unreleased music that is publicly available in archives and other audio recordings. Unlike national libraries, countries of the world rarely resort to the creation of state music libraries. In the USSR, the functions of the state music library were performed by the state record company Melody and the State Radio and Television Fund . In Russia, some functions of the state library are performed by the Russian Federal Service for Television and Radio Broadcasting . Regional music libraries act as branches of the state music library.
Public music libraries in modern times are departments of public libraries . In many countries of the world, public libraries provide visitors with the opportunity to get acquainted with the most commonly used and popular audio products, as well as classical music .
Personal music libraries are personal collections of music publications stored in various physical and digital formats .
Library cataloging systems
Until the last quarter of the 20th century, cataloging of music libraries was almost identical to card systems of library catalogs, where the recording plays the role of the book as an atomic component of the catalog. With the development of electronic computing systems, cataloging of music libraries has also been simplified by a scheme similar to libraries. The avalanche-like increase in demand for music library cataloging systems began in the late 1990s with the beginning of the widespread use of digital music, in particular in mp3 format. Currently, the market for cataloging systems for private music libraries is almost completely occupied by popular software products such as Winamp and iTunes .
Music and Philosophy
Maintaining private music libraries is almost inextricably linked with the philophony and in many cases the philophonic component of collecting dominates the musical. Thanks to technological innovations, in recent years, the philophony can be singled out as a special category for conducting a music library, which largely explains such phenomena of the modern information society as music trading, the increased popularity of antique and rare music carriers and several others.
