Biography

Born November 11, 1937 in Tashkent in a family of employees.

Since 1950, he was called by the bishop of Tashkent and Central Asia Guriy (Egorov) to serve at the bishops' services.

In 1955 he graduated from high school and with the blessing of the Tashkent Archbishop Yermogen (Golubev) entered the Saratov Theological Seminary , in 1956 he moved to the Leningrad Theological Seminary also with the permission of Archbishop Yermogen.

In 1958-1960 he served in the ranks of the Soviet Army [1] .

In 1960-1961 he was the clerk of the Tashkent Diocesan Administration [1] .

In 1962 he graduated from the Leningrad Theological Seminary and entered the Leningrad Theological Academy [1] , which he graduated in 1966 with the degree of candidate of theology for the essay “The service of Holy Easter in its historical development.”

On December 19, 1965, Metropolitan Nicodemus (Rotov) was tonsured a monk [1] with the name Herman in the academic John the Theologian Church.

On December 26, 1965, he was ordained bishop of Zaraisk Juvenal (Poyarkov) [1] .

On May 29, 1966 he was ordained a hieromonk by Metropolitan of Leningrad and Ladoga Nicodemus (Rotov) [1] .

On August 29, 1968 he was appointed Acting Rector of the Leningrad Theological Academy [1] .

Bishop of Tikhvin

On November 28, 1968, at a meeting of the Holy Synod, Archimandrite German was determined to be Bishop of Tikhvin , Vicar of the Leningrad Diocese , as well as Rector of the Leningrad Theological Academy and Seminary [1] .

At noon on December 5 of the same year, in the church of the Leningrad Theological Academy, the appointment of Archimandrite German as Bishop of Tikhvin took place. December 6, 1968 in the academic John the Theological Church in Leningrad, was ordained bishop of Tikhvin, vicar of the Leningrad diocese. The consecration was performed by the Metropolitan of Leningrad and Novgorod Nicodemus (Rotov) , the Archbishop of Ivanovo and Kinesham theodosius (Pogorsky) , the Bishop of Arkhangelsk and Kholmogorsky Nikon (Fomichev) , the Bishop of Dmitrov, the Bishop of Episcopal, the Bishop of Episcopalism .

Since March 20, 1969 - Member of the Commission of the Holy Synod on Christian Unity.

January 31, 1991 by the decision of the Holy Synod appointed Archbishop of Volgograd and Kamyshinsky .

On February 25, 2000, by Decree of the Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia Alexy II No. 586, for the diligent service of the Church of God, Archbishop German was elevated to the rank of Metropolitan [2] .

On March 15, 2012, the Holy Synod, after hearing a report from Metropolitan German, singled out two new ones from the Volgograd diocese: Kalachev and Uryupinsky, while all three dioceses became part of the newly formed Volgograd Metropolis , headed by Metropolitan German. Since the ruling bishop was not elected for the Kalachev diocese , Metropolitan German was appointed its interim manager [3] and governed it until November 2, 2013 [4] .

On December 28, 2018, by the decision of the Holy Synod, he was put to rest. The place of stay is determined by the city of Volgograd with contents from the Volgograd Diocesan Administration [5] .

On January 17, 2019, in the Hall of Military and Labor Glory, the Governor of Volgograd Region Andrei Bocharov presented Metropolitan German with the medal “Peace. Friendship. Consent ”for many years of work to develop and strengthen interfaith harmony in the Volgograd Region, noting the contribution of Metropolitan German to the revival of Orthodox shrines and the spiritual and moral education of the younger generation [6] .
