Chen Shuibyan ( Chinese trade. 陳水扁 , ex. 陈水扁 , pinyin : Chén Shuǐbiǎn ; south-Minsk. Tân Chúi-píⁿ ; born October 12, 1950 , Taiwan ) - Taiwanese politician, from May 20, 2000 to May 20, 2008 - President of the Republic of China and Chairman of the Democratic Progressive Party . He was convicted of corruption . January 5, 2015 prematurely released.

Biography
In 1974, graduated from National Taiwan University , Bachelor of Law. He worked as a lawyer, defended the opposition in court.
In 1981-1985, he was elected to the Taipei City Council as a representative of the opposition movement of independent candidates (opposition parties were not allowed).
In 1989, elected to the Legislative Yuan.
In 1994, he was elected mayor of Taipei from the DPP, the first time a representative of the opposition became mayor.
As President
With his coming to power in 2000, more than half a century of Kuomintang rule in Taiwan was interrupted.
Chen Shui-bian was elected for a second term in 2004.
In 2006, a scandal erupted around Chen Shui-bian and his family , cashing out fake checks on airline tickets and other goods and services. In Taipei, thousands and many days of demonstrations were held demanding the resignation of the president, but Chen Shui-bian did not resign.
In early 2008, Chen’s party lost the parliamentary elections, after which he resigned as party leader. March 20, 2008, the next presidential election was held, in which the Kuomintang candidate Ma Ying-jeou won.
Criminal Case
On November 11, 2008, Chen Shui-bian was arrested on charges of bribery and money laundering . After some time, a court was held that found him guilty on all counts: embezzlement of state funds, money laundering, receiving bribes, trade in official posts, and sentenced to life imprisonment [1] . His wife was also found guilty of committing a number of crimes, including taking bribes, money laundering, trading in official posts, giving false testimonies and others. On June 11, 2010, a Taiwanese court replaced life imprisonment with twenty years of imprisonment [2] . Chen Shui-bian and his wife, Wu Shuizhen, are each sentenced to 20 years in prison and pay a fine of 250 million and 200 million new Taiwan dollars, respectively [3] .
On January 5, 2015, he was prematurely released due to "state of health and the need to undergo treatment." The wife continues to serve her term [4] .
